Opting to move “De Voorzet” from Paris to Amsterdam gives Ajax fans many frustrations

1 min read

Many football fans are lyrical about Ruben van Bommel’s assist against Germany last Thursday. And rightly so, but...

So too journalist Sjoerd Mossou. This is clearly brought to the fore by Mossou in his column for Algemeen Dagblad. Van Bommel made his debut last Thursday in the Johan Cruijff Arena for the Netherlands national team and, as a substitute, was immediately important with an assist for former PSV player Cody Gakpo in stoppage time.

That prevented a defeat against Die Mannschaft and afterwards the main topic of conversation was Van Bommel's assist. ''A masterpiece for the Louvre'', writes the supporter from NAC Breda, among other things.

Also regarding the way Van Bommel set up the ball for Gakpo, a lot of admiration is in order. ''The ball had such a wonderful curve that for a split second it looked like a kind of AI animation: too perfect. Almost too good to be true. You come across all sorts of brilliant assists there,'' the journalist continues.

Finally, the reporter also points to earlier assists in Oranje by Dutch greats such as Johan Cruijff and Willem van Hanegem. Yet the PSV player’s assist last Thursday stands out far above them.

''You come across all kinds of stunning assists there. Balls softer than satin, balls on the run, balls with the outside, balls at exactly the right speed, balls in the space. But De Voorzet had it all at the same time. No assist in the history of the Netherlands national team was more perfect than this one'', Mossou concludes.

As always, there are also this time many people on social media who are, by definition, opposed to all the compliments that Ruben van Bommel receives. In particular in Amsterdam and the surrounding area, they want nothing to do with the young Van Bommel. That, of course, has to do with the unfortunate but hefty charge on Ajax player Bouwman in the Johan Cruijff Arena. Ajax fans are still not over this setback, which had no winners.

Ajax fans are still seething about Ruben van Bommel and so his calls for the Netherlands national team are being criticized, as well as his brilliant assist to Cody Gakpo. Yes, even that annoys Ajax fans. Imagine lying awake about it...because yes, people are still lying awake about it, about Ruben van Bommel. An Ajax fan is so fed up with the praise on social media that this fan of the Amsterdam club brings up Sneijder’s name. 'Yes, but Sneijder has also given balls like that sometimes,' the clearly frustrated Ajax fan posted on X after rewatching the images of the brilliant assist to Gakpo.

Well, we’ll then just not opt to move “De Voorzet”, as Sjoerd Mossou describes it, from the museum Het Loevre to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, because then, coming the Ajax fans will be in uproar, they conclude in advance with a wink. That would cause even more Amsterdam frustrations...And Sjoerd Mossou? He’s enjoying “De Voorzet” all weekend long
