Once again praised: “Beware of big talk”
1 min readPSV icon Mark van Bommel is praised in Belgium. Van Bommel debuted last week as head coach of De Rode Duivels.
Belgium won 0-2 against Italy and as a result the former PSV player thus had a dream debut. However, last Monday it went wrong towards the end of the match and they lost 0-1 to France.
Despite this, journalist Ludo Vandewalle is full of praise for Van Bommel. Vandewalle says this in his column for the publication Het Nieuwsblad.
''Van Bommel is Dutch. You can feel it. Our neighbors to the north traditionally go into every tournament with swagger and ambition. Right or wrong, they always go for gold. Belgium only embraced that recently, cautiously, since the golden generation, and it’s now already a bit less'', begins the journalist.
Where Dutch people in Belgium are often dismissed as arrogant, according to the reporter that is completely not the case with the former midfielder. ''The head coach holds back from grandstanding, but still radiates an enormous amount of self-confidence. He also wants to pass that on to his group. There isn’t a conversation with his Dutch-speaking Limburg compatriot that he doesn’t praise his squad. Quality, intelligence, work ethic... He also acts accordingly'', Vandewalle continues.
Even against Les Bleus, Van Bommel did not adapt himself to the opposition, and that can earn a lot of praise. ''He played in his way. Just play football, boys, go for your own chances. That is eagerly picked up by the players. They feel that he trusts them. But he is not arrogant. Not even naïve. When the expected win against Turkey comes up, he still presses the brake, just for a moment,'' concludes the journalist.

🔥 van Bommel die zegt "gewoon voetballen" en tegelijk op tijd gas terugneemt, daar zit klasse. Als hij dezelfde intelligentie combineert met werkkracht, dan gaat België echt gevaarlijk worden. Maar ik wil wél zien dat ze vaker die eerste goal forceren.
Goeie speech, maar ik ben nog steeds benieuwd hoe hij de controle behoudt als PSV-spelers in zijn concept minder ruimte krijgen. Kwaliteit en werkkracht zijn top, maar zonder structurele rust zie je soms te veel chaos 😅
"Hij roemt zijn spelerskern" ja ok, maar in de wedstrijd moet je ook scherp zijn. tegen Les Bleus moest het op z'n minst meer overtuigend zijn. Hoop dat die busnes-mentaliteit niet omslaat in te veel sentiment.
Lmao dat journalisten hem zo loven terwijl België punten laat liggen. Tbh die "vertrouwt de spelers" vibe kan ook leiden tot te veel vrijheid. Gegen Frankrijk was het niet peak.

I like the quote about not being arrogant or naive. The "rem trappen" part is spot on when you have to manage moments. Still, losing to France shows you can't just "play your way" if the details fail.

France 0-1 lost after Italy 0-2... that is football, maar ik snap dat mensen nu al complimenten smijten. Tbh: vertrouwen geven is nice, maar je wil ook structureel domineren. Wel goed dat hij niet doorslaat in bravoure.
0-2 tegen Italië en meteen zo'n debuut... nice. Maar ik snap die kritiek ook, want tegen Frankrijk viel het idee ineens weg. Van Bommel heeft klasse, maar luiheid in de fase na de 0-2 bestaat ook niet gratis.
That "behoedt zich voor grootspraak" sounds exactly like Van Bommel in charge. Zelfvertrouwen zonder pochen is lastig, maar hij lijkt het te balanceren. Benieuwd of hij datzelfde tempo terugbrengt bij de Rode Duivels.
