NOS analysts are full of praise, but Ajax fans are having a hard time with it: “A great goal by Cody Gakpo?”
1 min readA world pass or a world goal? Or both? Either way, Ruben van Bommel has become the subject of conversation.
Ruben van Bommel made a very good impression in the little ten minutes that he took part during his Oranje debut. The PSV player was good for an assist on former PSV player Cody Gakpo. And that earns praise, but not from everyone. The AD football podcast called Cody Gakpo's goal a world-class goal, but preceded by a world-class pass.
That prevented a defeat against Germany in the 92nd minute for debuting national team coach Xavi Hernandez. Afterwards, NOS analysts Rafael van der Vaart and Ronald de Boer were full of praise for Van Bommel's assist.
Van der Vaart is especially full of praise for the way of passing. ''We all like him, let's make that clear. But this goal is in a different category. Giving a ball with the outside of your foot is already very difficult, but with so much confidence and so much feel... Luka Modric gives them still like that'', says the former midfielder to the camera of NOS.
Then De Boer comes in and the former footballer even cites Johan Cruijff’s goal in the semi-final of the 1974 World Cup. ''That goal by Gakpo too. Johan Cruijff did it like that against Brazil. Really fantastic'', the analyst says lyrically, after which Van der Vaart responds: ''Everything was spot on. Of course he sees him running, but it has to be with exactly the right speed and the right feeling.''

Then the former midfielder continues. ''When Van Bommel rolls the ball along the ground, he will probably be intercepted. It was truly an incredibly beautiful goal'', says Van der Vaart.
In the end, De Boer speaks about a deserved goal. ''It was very justified. I thought Oranje was very good in the second half, and at times they were even good for control'', said the analyst, who has received a lot of criticism from many Ajax fans because, yes, you simply can't praise Ruben van Bommel positively after Ajax - PSV. His pass to Gakpo is therefore not celebrated at all among a number of Ajax fans, but rather criticized. Because, well, it wasn't that special...
Ah yes. A new PSV star has been born, a new Oranje star has been born and that shines in and around the Johan Cruijff Arena.
