New function for former PSV coach: “Make him national team coach of the Netherlands”
1 min readFormer PSV coach Roger Schmidt will become the successor to Jürgen Klopp as Global Head of Soccer for energy drink Red Bull. According to Fabrizio Romano, an agreement between the Austrian brand and Schmidt is close.
Klopp has been appointed by the DFB as the new national coach of Germany and therefore Red Bull had to look for a successor. The Austrian conglomerate has therefore settled on the former PSV coach.
Schmidt stood at the helm as coach at PSV between 2020 and 2022. Under his leadership, PSV finished second twice and in 2021 won the Johan Cruyff Shield.
In 2022, for the first time since 2012, the KNVB Cup was won again after PSV, shortly after halftime, managed to turn around a 0-1 deficit against Ajax into a 2-1 victory. Moreover, in 2022 under Schmidt, PSV competed strongly for the league title, but partly due to questionable decisions to PSV’s disadvantage against Ajax and Feyenoord, the league title went to Ajax.

In 2022, Schmidt left PSV to become a coach at SL Benfica in Portugal. At PSV, the German was succeeded by Ruud van Nistelrooy. In the AD Football podcast, last week it was suggested to make Schmidt the national team coach of the Netherlands. 'That is a thought-provoking idea', could be heard in the AD football podcast.
At Benfica, Schmidt was champion of Portugal in his first season and was also named Coach of the Year. At the beginning of 2024/2025, the German was dismissed by the club management due to disappointing results at the start of the season.

If Schmidt gets this new Red Bull job after Klopp leaving, it feels like he is getting rewarded for the PSV near-misses. Two times second and that KNVB Beker run vs Ajax was peak stuff, but the title fight vs Ajax and Feyenoord should still haunt him a bit 💀
tbh idk about "global head of soccer" for Schmidt, seems like a paperwork role not tactics. But Red Bull picking him after PSV and Benfica is kinda logical, dude clearly knows how to build structure.
