Much praise for PSV icon: “I like that he started out like this”

1 min read

Mark van Bommel has completed his first two matches as coach of Belgium. On Friday evening, they won 0-2 against Italy.

That gave Van Bommel an excellent debut with the Red Devils. On Monday evening in Brussels, the Belgians nevertheless went down 0-1 to France because of a goal by Michael Olise shortly before time.

At our southern neighbors, the PSV icon is a big name as a coach in contrast to in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, Theo Janssen and Ruud Gullit find it strange that the KNVB, while looking for a new national team coach, never approached Van Bommel.

That both analysts let know in the show Rondo on Ziggo Sport. ''We haven't heard the name Van Bommel. There (in Belgium, ed.) he is indeed a man. I'm happy about that. The way he played against Italy has brought a lot of admiration. I like how he started that way'', Gullit says.

In the summer of 2018, the born Maasbrachter was appointed head coach of PSV as a successor to Phillip Cocu. In December 2019, the former midfielder was dismissed from his job after a run of disappointing results in both the league and in the Europa League.

Because of this, Janssen thinks that in Zeist they did not come up with Van Bommel in the search for a successor to Ronald Koeman. ''Could that have something to do with how he left PSV? That he involved himself in everything and that we find that difficult? He shows that he is simply a good coach,'' the analyst said.

i mean, PSV let him go in december 2019, but you cannot deny he bounced back. Tbh Belgium's first result vs Italy was peak timing. France game sucks, but France is France.
