Morning papers lyrical after debut: “A work of art”
1 min readNetherlands played at home on Thursday evening to a 1-1 draw against Germany. Ruben van Bommel played an important role in that.
Van Bommel namely came on for Crysencio Summerville in the 83rd minute and was good for an assist for the 1-1 by former PSV player Cody Gakpo in the 92nd minute. The PSV man squared the ball with the outside of his right foot and Gakpo finished it off in magnificent fashion, allowing national coach Xavi Hernandez to make his debut with a draw.
That also gave Van Bommel an excellent debut, and the morning newspapers did not miss it either. There, the contribution of the PSV player prior to Gakpo's goal is not overlooked either.
''Xavi Hernández's debut as head coach of Oranje seemed for a long time to be fated to end in misfortune. But just before the end, the well-deserved equalizer still arrived. From a truly magnificent cross by debutant and substitute Ruben van Bommel, Cody Gakpo scored the equalizer. A more than deserved point for a Netherlands national team playing with thrilling enthusiasm'', reported the Algemeen Dagblad.

De Telegraaf also has attention for the work of the winger. ''But thanks to a perfect cross from substitute Ruben van Bommel and a great goal by Cody Gakpo, there was justice two minutes into stoppage time,'' the outlet writes, among other things.
De Volkskrant pays attention to Gakpo and Van Bommel. ''It did not go unnoticed, the debut of national coach Xavi Hernández with the Netherlands team. Spectacular was Cody Gakpo's equalizer in the final minute against the Germans, after a fabulous cross by Ruben van Bommel. He had only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes, debutant Ruben van Bommel, when he decided on a dribble over the left flank with a right-footed cross, outside of the foot. What a great ball. A masterpiece in one touch. Hard, full of feeling, perfect, placed to the far post. Cody Gakpo had already indicated where he was going and volleyed the ball into the net with a magnificent effort, after the sprint. Sublime goal. Candidate for goal of the year. Applause. Satisfied, heading home,'' according to the national newspaper.

"Een kunstwerk in één trap" is exactly what that was. Outside right, outside foot, perfect weight to the second post, and Gakpo does the rest. Absolute banger. 💯⚽
smh, Germany were chasing the whole time and then it's an ex-PSV moment again. Gakpo scoring in stoppage time is peak stuff, but PSV fans will be buzzing about that outside-foot cross.
Xavi's debut with a 1-1 is nice, but for me the story is Ruben van Bommel's impact. Coming on in the 83rd and then delivering that assist, that's not luck, that's technique. 👀
I love how the article describes "a kunstwerk" in one touch. But tbh Summerville off and Van Bommel on and suddenly it clicks, that shows PSV should keep trusting that profile. Also Gakpo's finish was elite.
That right-foot outside strike assist in the 92nd is pure quality. Van Bommel looked like he belonged instantly, no jitters. 🔥
"Een kunstwerk" is wel echt overdreven, maar oké die voorzet was natuurlijk ziek. Als Ruben vaker zo durft in te vallen, dan gaat het bij PSV ook serieus beter staan. Gakpo stond er wel klaar, dus credit waar het hoort.
83e minuut ingevallen en meteen beslissend, echt bizar hoe snel Ruben impact maakt. Die buitenkant-rechts pass naar Gakpo was gewoon level "kans op doelpunt van het jaar" 🔥.
