Mark van Bommel speaks out: “No, that wasn’t there.”
1 min readWhere the KNVB is still looking for a new national team coach, Belgium already has a successor to Rudi Garcia in place for two weeks with PSV icon Mark van Bommel. In the meantime, Van Bommel has already had his first press conference as coach of the Red Devils.
In it, the former PSV player says that no contact was sought with the KNVB. "No, that wasn't the case," Van Bommel says during the press conference.
''It is up to De Jong to look for a national team coach for the Netherlands. I was glad that I received the offer here. So I won’t make any comparisons'', continues the former international of the Netherlands national team.
Van Bommel is back in football after two years. In the summer of 2024, the newly appointed national team coach of the Belgians left Royal Antwerp FC and has been without an employer since then.
Also the serious injury of his son Ruben played a role in the fact that Mark last season consciously did not step in anywhere. ''I stayed with him, even during the operation in London. That couldn’t be done as a club coach. So I’m glad I didn’t sign anywhere and waited for this opportunity. I’m very happy that I’m sitting here. It’s different from a job as a club coach, but I think this challenge suits me. I grew up near the border and I was already with Antwerp, so the connection with the country is there'', PSV icon.
Van Bommel also addresses the ambitions with the Red Devils. ''In the Netherlands they say quite often: 'We’re going to be world champions.' Yet there are a lot of factors. So I don’t want to go around shouting that we’re going to win the European Championship, even though that is the reason why we play,'' the former PSV player said.

"Ik ben nergens getekend en gewacht" respect, maar ik hoop echt dat hij niet alleen tactisch gaat, ook mentaal. Als hij de druk straks voelt bij België, moet hij zijn keuzes blijven maken zoals bij Antwerp. W is goated, maar nu even afwachten of dit ook werkt op EK-niveau.
Eens. En die zin over EK winnen zonder te roepen dat ze het gaan pakken, dat is precies PSV-mentaliteit. Eerst bouwen, dan pas dromen. 🥇⚽
Die zin "We worden wereldkampioen" is z'n type nuance wel. No cap hij blijft realistisch, maar ik denk dat België met hem energie kan krijgen. 🚀
Tja, ik snap zijn focus met z'n zoon Ruben, maar sportief had PSV er ook wel van willen profiteren. Nu België dus, en Mark die geen vergelijkingen trekt... dat is slim. Maar stiekem: die wereldkampioen-mentaliteit is classic van die Rode Duivels verhalen lol.
Mark zegt dat het "aan De Jong" is om een bondscoach te zoeken voor Nederland, maar als ik eerlijk ben klinkt dat alsof er gewoon geen concrete stappen waren. Van Bommel voelt zich nu klaar voor België, zeker met die band met het land. 👀
Ik snap z'n antwoord over geen vergelijkingen trekken, maar het blijft pijnlijk dat hij meteen de KNVB buiten de deur houdt. Wel logisch dat hij eerst bij zijn zoon bleef, dat neemt niemand hem kwalijk. ❤️
