Mark van Bommel clearly: “That also has to be the mindset.”
1 min readPSV icon Mark van Bommel stands for his debut as Belgium coach. The Belgians play away against Italy on Friday evening.
That will be the first time for Van Bommel that the former PSV player will be standing along the touchline as head coach of the Red Devils. Born in Maasbracht, he was appointed by the KBVB after the World Cup in North America as a successor to the stepped-down Rudi Garcia.
Sporting director Vincent Mannaert of the Belgian football association has indicated that a new chapter has begun for the Belgian national team. Afterwards, Mannaert gives the floor to Van Bommel to address the squad of De Rode Duivels.
At the last World Cup, Belgium were eliminated in the quarterfinal by the eventual world champions Spain, but according to Van Bommel, De Rode Duivels could have gotten more out of the tournament. ''That is also the mentality we need for the upcoming tournaments, the Nations League and the European Championship. I don't want to be a schoolmaster, but I do want to play with an idea'', Van Bommel says in a video that is shared by the KBVB.

After that, the PSV icon continues. ''That means there are talks, individually, line by line, or with the whole group. I think it’s super important that the whole group knows what we have to do'', said Van Bommel.
