Journalist VI sees the ideal Serie A defender for PSV and points to Schouten: “It could be that he’s open to that.”

The new Eredivisie season has already got underway and PSV had a poor start with a 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard. In particular, at the back it looked not quite right on multiple occasions again, and that also led to a mistake by Ryan Flamingo at Fortuna's 0-1.

According to journalists Marco Timmer and Simon Zwartkruis of Voetbal International, it is therefore important that PSV focuses on defensive reinforcements. Timmer and Zwartkruis say this in the Rondje Eredivisie column of VI.

''They really do need someone there'', Timmer opens. ''It is very uncertain in the back and they will feel the effects of that if it doesn't change soon. After the defeat against AZ, it was immediately Sano and Kostic who came. So I'm curious what happens this week. But that something really needs to happen is clear'', the reporter continues.

Black-and-Red Kreuz shares Timmer's opinion and calls for a new central defender at PSV. ''Kostic can probably do it in a good way from the left flank'', begins Black-and-Red Kreuz and the journalist is referring to carrying out Bosz's playing style.

''I think it would indeed be quite useful if you place at least one defender's rock in the center'', the reporter continues, after which Timmer chimes in: ''And that can therefore also be done in a footballing way. Because last year, he (Bosz) didn't go along with it when Flamingo didn't cooperate; he simply pulled Schouten back. That's of course not a pure defender, we could say. But he is a guy who is so solid in the build-up and so quick. Then you're already talking in Bosz's philosophy. So what are you going to do?'', Timmer wonders.

Next, any potential candidates are brought to the table as reinforcements, where among others the names of Lutsharel Geertruida and Sam Beukema are mentioned, just like former Ajax player Davinson Sanchez, who worked with Bosz in 2016/2017. Still, Timmer expects the same scenario for Beukema, who is active for Napoli, as for Jerdy Schouten, who moved from Bologna to PSV in the summer of 2023.

''It could very well be that what happened with Schouten, from Bologna to PSV, that Sam Beukema would also be open to it. Because at PSV you also play in the Champions League, and Schouten returned explicitly to PSV to be in the spotlight for the Netherlands national team. AC Milan wanted him. But he didn’t want to go there. 'I want to go to PSV. I want to be in the spotlight with Oranje.' That could very well be the type. But Beukema can also play good football and is a leader'', according to Timmer.
