Joey Veerman points out the biggest rival for PSV in 2026/2027
1 min readPSV hopes to make a bid for a fourth consecutive league title this season. Since Peter Bosz was appointed, the club has been league champion every year, and last season Bosz’s team was even the earliest champion in the history of the Eredivisie.
If it were up to Joey Veerman, PSV would finish just like the past three seasons with the championship trophy in their hands. Veerman says this to ESPN.
''Just first'', the midfielder says without hesitation after being asked where PSV will finish in the 2026/2027 season.
After that, the Volendam native is asked which club is the biggest challenger to PSV, and Veerman doesn’t have to think long about that either. ''Ajax'', says the PSV player.
In addition, Veerman expects to make his return to the Dutch national team in 2026. After the 2024 European Championship, where Oranje lost 1-2 to England in the semi-final, the PSV player was never included in Ronald Koeman's squad, and after the match PSV - FC Twente (5-1) on 17 May of last month, Veerman said he no longer needed to be called up by Koeman.

"Ajax", aldus de PSV'er... goed dat hij het hardop zegt, maar ik geloof dat AZ of Feyenoord de echte struikelblokken gaan worden. PSV-voetbal is gewoon gevoelig voor druk en vroege verliezen van balbezit. Hopelijk is Veerman dan klaar om het tempo te breken en ons weer rust te geven.
Eens. Maar Ajax als grootste concurrent is een beetje cap toch, tbh. PSV moet vooral zichzelf overtreffen, want die lijn onder Bosz is wat het verschil maakt. Als we punten laten liggen tegen de kleine ploegen, doet Ajax niet eens mee aan die discussie.
Nog steeds grappig dat hij zegt dat Koeman niet meer hoeft te bellen 😂. Maar eerlijk, na die halve finale tegen Engeland en dan nul selecties... ik snap dat hij klaar is met afwachten. Als PSV in 2026 weer trekt, moet Oranje hem wel willen.
Ajax gaat vooral gevaarlijk zijn als ze tegen ons de bal langer vasthouden en wij minder ruimte krijgen in de halfspaces. Bosz heeft dit seizoen toch die control nodig, anders wordt het een circus. Hopelijk blijft Veerman zelf die snelheid brengen tussen de linies.
"Gewoon eerste" is echt Veerman-mentaliteit. Maar Ajax als grootste uitdager is logisch, al vind ik dat Feyenoord ook gevaarlijk kan worden als ze hun passing verbeteren. Als PSV de start blijft doortrekken zoals Bosz dat altijd wil, dan komt het kampioenschap vanzelf.
