1 min readCoach Peter Bosz is satisfied with the development within his team on the defensive side despite the draw last Thursday against Shakhtar Donetsk. The trainer saw that PSV had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Despite this, Bosz is satisfied with the way his team is also taking the necessary steps defensively. In the beginning of the season, there was a lot of criticism of the PSV defense.
In addition, the coach also points to the poor start of the European campaign last season. Back then, PSV lost their opening match 1-3 to Union Saint-Gilliose.
''Last year we lost at home to Union, and that defeat was completely deserved. We didn’t do it well then and we only kept catching up with what had already happened. That was not the case this time, and looking at the match as a whole, it was a fair result. I think we’re making enormous strides defensively'', Bosz says to De Telegraaf.
The coach also goes deeper into the swap of Ricardo Pepi. Pepi was invisible last Thursday and was therefore also brought over to the side in favor of Sven Mijnans.
''If you create almost no chances for 83 minutes with a striker up front, then I think the moment has arrived to see whether it might not have been possible in another way. That has nothing to do with Pepi, because he has to be set up and in this match he’s been brought into play very little. This time, we weren’t able to play it out footballingly'', Bosz said, thereby casually hinting at a change of guard in the frontline.
Of course, Ricardo Pepi is the first striker, but anyone who saw PSV play last season in Leverkusen after Pepi was forced to be substituted due to an injury in Rotterdam on a visit to Excelsior can hardly come to any other conclusion than that, in a month, Pepi might well become the scapegoat in Leipzig. A front line with Lammers and Til and/or Til and Mijnans behind them is perhaps closer than we think.

"het moment ook wel is aangebroken"... dus wachtrijen voor Leipzig? Ik vrees dat Pepi dan ineens veel minder minuten pakt. En als dat betekent dat we Lammers en Til achter de spits krijgen, dan ben ik niet eens tegen die wisseling, als het voetbal maar sneller gaat. 1-1 is ok, maar we moeten wel vooruit blijven kijken.
Eens, die hint naar een wachtwisseling klopt wel. Met Lammers en Til achter een spits voelt PSV offensief sneller, zeker als je ziet dat ze het niet voetballend uit kunnen spelen tegen Shakhtar. Als Pepi volgende maand tegen Leipzig weer zo weinig gevoed wordt, dan is "kind van de rekening" imo helaas echt mogelijk 🔥⚽
Eens. Eerst defensief stappen maken is mooi, maar als voorin "niets creëren" de norm wordt dan ga je punten verliezen in de CL. Ik zie meer waarde in Til + Mijnans achter een type spits, of Til + Lammers eromheen. Rockets for the transition, geen parking the bus. 🔥
"Als je 83 minuten lang bijna geen kans creëert" man, dan is het dus niet alleen Pepi. Dan ligt het probleem bij de passing, timing, of de keuze om Lammers en Til niet slimmer te gebruiken. Leipzig is geen plek om te gokken.
tbh klinkt het alsof Bosz zelf al twijfelt over hoe Pepi gebracht wordt. Als hij 83 minuten niks kan doen, dan mis je iets in de opbouw of in het moment van aanspelen. En dan Sven Mijnans toch maar, logisch... maar ik hoop dat het niet een hoop wissels wordt zonder plan.
Bosz zegt dat defensief "enorme stappen" zijn gemaakt, fair... maar ik wil wel meer scherpte voorin zien. Pepi 83 minuten lang bijna geen kansen, dan moet je toch gewoon durven te schuiven. Mijnans erin was iig een signaal.
Ngl, ik zag Pepi tegen Shakhtar echt weinig worden. Als Bosz denkt dat het voetballend niet lukt, dan moet je het toch gewoon forceren met Lammers/Til en creatie vanuit de tweede lijn. Anders sta je weer lang te wachten op dat ene moment. 👀⚽
Die wissel van Pepi en dat Mijnans erin kwam voelt als een duidelijke boodschap. "Dat heeft niks met Pepi te maken" sure... maar het resultaat is dat Bosz zegt dat het anders moet. Tbh ik wil ook meer snelheid achterin, maar vooral 1-1 thuis zou minder moeten.
Bosz zegt dat de uitslag "terecht" is en ik snap de defensieve stap, maar voorin moeten we ook iets meer maken. 83 minuten bijna geen kansen met een spits voorop is echt pijnlijk. Als Pepi weinig in stelling wordt gebracht, waarom dan niet eerder omschakelen?
