Huntelaar in the PSV spotlights, Ajax fans disappointed with the “Huntelaar situation”

He was still on the payroll in Amsterdam for months, but he could no longer do anything for Ajax. Health comes first, always.

Mentaly, it has been a bit less with Klaas Jan Huntelaar in recent years, but in the meantime the Achterhoeker is back on the right track, which is good to call. Huntelaar, who has a past with PSV and Ajax, has, just like Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mark van Bommel, a talented son who is currently making quite a name for himself at PSV, after a well-considered choice between several clubs. Forced to leave Vitesse, Seb Huntelaar has in the meantime been holding his own more than just fine in the PSV academy.

That certainly looks promising. Former top striker and father Klaas-Jan Huntelaar made his debut in 2002 under Guus Hiddink at PSV. Still, the former attacker was never able to break through in Eindhoven. Perhaps his son, whose development has put him firmly in the spotlight, will manage to do so.

Huntelaar-senior follows his son closely. Huntelaar says so in an interview with Sportnieuws.nl. The young talented son of Huntelaar chose PSV in September 2025, where other major clubs in the Netherlands also desperately wanted to sign the son of the former top scorer. Ajax fans still complain about the choice for PSV. In particular, on social media, Ajax fans express their frustrations about the decision to go to PSV. Moreover, father Klaas Jan was still on the payroll in Amsterdam for a long time without actively playing for the Amsterdam club. That still annoys a number of fans of the Amsterdam club, who call Huntelaar ungrateful on social media. Well, for whatever it’s worth...

That Huntelaar senior not managing to break through at PSV had to do with, among other things, strong competition from strikers such as Mateja Kezman and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. As a result, Huntelaar was loaned by PSV in the second half of the 2002/2003 season to De Graafschap, to be loaned in 2003/2004 to the now-bankrupt AGOVV.

In 2004, the former international player left for sc Heerenveen and subsequently, via Ajax, went on to play for, among others, Real Madrid CF and AC Milan. In 2021, Huntelaar ended his career as a footballer.

In doing so, the former attacker draws a few comparisons between himself and his son. ''It’s due to his talent and now he has to make those steps. Now you’ll really see whether he has the talent to make it into a first team or not. He does play a bit the same, but he is still more geared towards the ball. He plays a bit more into it'', says father Klaas-Jan.

After that, the former striker continues. ''I often waited for the moments of: okay, now I know I have to be there, and then I was there. Every time I tried to take up a position, and he tries from time to time to join in a bit more in the game with his feet. In terms of style, he does look a bit like me, but he is also different. I let him figure out most of it himself, but if he has questions, he can come and, and we’ll get started on it. We talk then'', Huntelaar continues.

Still, Huntelaar thinks his son will not experience pressure from the surname that the PSV talent carries with it. ''No, I don't think so. It doesn't look like he's going to have trouble with it,'' concludes the former striker.
