Historical balance at the turn of the century | Always lots of trouble in Enschede
1 min readNext Sunday, PSV travels to Enschede for the always tricky away match against FC Twente. Peter Bosz’s side kick off at 14:30 at De Grolsch Veste and hopes to go into the international break as league leaders.
Since the turn of the millennium, PSV often dropped points when playing away against the Tukkers. Between the 2006/2007 season and the 2013/2014 season, PSV even failed to win a single time away at FC Twente; during that period, the Tukkers took the full three points three times, and the match ended in a draw five times
In the season 2011/2012, referee Kevin Blom played a questionable role by handing out a ridiculous red card to Kevin Strootman after a duel with Luuk de Jong, which meant PSV could not hold on to a 1-2 lead and the match ultimately ended 2-2. Fred Rutten, at the time head coach of PSV, was so furious about this red card that the born Tukker decided not to shake Blom’s hand after the match.
It was not until the 2014/2015 season that PSV, for the first time since 29 October 2005, brought back the full haul to Eindhoven thanks to a 0-5 victory. Ultimately, the team, led by Phillip Cocu, increasingly charted a course toward the club’s 22nd league title, which was ultimately secured on 18 April 2015 with a 4-1 victory over sc Heerenveen at the Philips Stadion.

On 21 April 2000, the first meeting between the two teams took place in Enschede after the turn of the century. Thanks to a hat-trick by Arnold Bruggink, PSV won 1-3, and thereby the team coached by Eric Gerets became Dutch champions for the fifteenth time in the club’s history.
After the turn of the millennium, the 2018/2019 season was the only time both teams did not play against each other because FC Twente that season competed in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie. Since the Tukkers’ promotion in 2019, this fixture has always been on the calendar, and it stands out that PSV always finds it difficult at De Grolsch Veste.
So the editions in the seasons 2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 ended in a draw and in the season 2022/2023 it was lost 2-1. In the season 2023/2024, FC Twente - PSV was the start of what many football fans described as 'month of truth' for PSV, with among other away matches against Sevilla CF in the UEFA Champions League and in the Eredivisie against Feyenoord and AZ.
Peter Bosz's team got off to a good start thanks to a 0-3 win against FC Twente after an early red card for Mees Hilgers, then won midweek after a spectacular comeback with a 2-3 victory over Sevilla and won on Sunday with a 1-2 away win at Feyenoord, which meant PSV had a ten-point lead over the Rotterdam side after fourteen matches. Next, they won at home 2-0 against sc Heerenveen, Bosz's team played 1-1 at home against Arsenal in the Champions League, and the 'month of truth' was concluded with a 0-4 win away at AZ.
Record away against FC Twente since the turn of the century:
Wins: 10
Draws: 11
Losses: 4

That history is crazy man.
