Former PSV player hopes for a World Cup upset: "That really lives on in this group"
1 min readFor Curaçao, Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Dutch time marks the World Cup debut on the schedule. The squad assembled by national team coach Dick Advocaat also includes a few former PSV players such as Shurandy Sambo and Jürgen Locadia.
Former PSV defender Joshua Brenet, who was active in PSV’s first team from 2012 to 2018, has been selected by Advocaat for The Blue Wave squad. Curaçao is the underdog in Group E with Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador as opponents.
Despite this, the country would like to surprise friend and foe by reaching the next round of the global end-of-season tournament. Brenet makes this known in an interview with Voetbal International.
''I am quite calm, down to earth. I have already played many big matches, but I really do feel this: this is the World Cup, the biggest of all. But I think it will truly hit me fully only when we get there and we have started. Of course, this is also where I, as a little boy, have dreamed of'', the former PSV player tells VI.
According to the winger defender, the goal of the next round is very strongly present in the team from the island. ''Making it to the next round—that really matters a lot in this group. We are footballers, and we are always competitive. We want to win. The fairy tale can still become even more beautiful. We are the underdog, but imagine if we get a result. If we take a point, maybe even win once. That can happen, you know. Then it will explode even more here,'' continues Brenet.
The first match against Germany is probably immediately the toughest match, thinks Brenet. ''We can't get around that. Ecuador is a physical team, but they come a little bit from our region. We can understand their game a bit better. And Ivory Coast will also play full of power. So we’ll have to deal with that. It will be difficult, but maybe they will also underestimate us. That's what we need to take advantage of. In any case, we will play with all our hearts and souls. It will be great anyway'', said the former PSV player.

Wel eerlijk: Duitsland is waarschijnlijk meteen een slachtpartij, maar ik vind het interessant dat Brenet zegt dat Ecuador wel te begrijpen is qua speelstijl. Als Curaçao slim druk zet en niet meteen wegloopt achterin, kunnen ze wat weerstand bieden.
🔥 Wie had dit gedacht, ex-PSV'er op het WK debuut. Als ze met hart en ziel spelen kan die groep ook gewoon echt impact maken, niet alleen meedoen.
Jürgen Locadia en Shurandy Sambo bij Advocaat, dat is toch wel een mooie PSV-lijn. Alleen moet Curaçao niet te veel hopen op magie, ze moeten vooral compact blijven tegen Duitsland. Anders is het vooral verdedigen en hopen op geluk 💀
Die quote "Die volgende ronde halen, dat leeft echt enorm in deze groep" is precies hoe je als underdog moet spelen. Gewoon compact, winnen van duels en die tweede bal oppakken. Als ze 1 momentje hebben, ontploft het inderdaad.
Brenet zegt dat Ivoorkust en Ecuador fysiek zijn en ja, dat zal je lijf voelen op zo'n toernooi. Curacao kan slimmer zijn met timing en drukdosering, maar onderschatten moet je echt niet rekenen. Wel nice dat hij denkt aan een punt of een keer winnen, dat is tenminste geloof.
"Dat leeft echt enorm in deze groep" moet wel iets zeggen. Ik denk alleen dat Duitsland meteen alles bepaalt, vooral als Curacao te veel gaat openen. Maar goed, onderdog-WK kan gek worden.
Duitsland is inderdaad de zwaarste opener, en als je dan ook nog underdog bent kan het ineens hard gaan. Ik snap de hype, maar als ze tegen Ivoorkust en Ecuador niet compact blijven dan ben je snel klaar. Toch zou een puntje tegen Duitsland echt compleet ploffen hier.

Nice om Brenet terug te zien in zo'n toernooi, en die quote over "next round halen" klinkt echt als pure PSV-mentaliteit. Curacao is underdog maar als ze tegen Duitsland 1 moment pakken kan het hek helemaal van de dam.
Brenet terug bij Advocaat voor zo'n WK-debuut, dat is echt mooi. Als Curaçao tegen Duitsland net hun plan haalt, kunnen ze geloof ik al punten pakken. 🔥
"De underdog" roepen ze allemaal, maar Brenet denkt echt na over de wedstrijden. Als ze Ecuador kunnen lezen en Ivoorkust met power fatsoenlijk opvangen, dan zit er echt iets in. Duitsers onderschatten, puntje pakken, en dan gaat het stadion natuurlijk los.
Brenet klinkt super nuchter, maar dat stukje "dit leeft echt enorm" is wel precies waarom dit soort stunt-mentaliteit werkt. Tegen Duitsland ga je meestal al op je tenen lopen, maar als Curaçao die eerste klap niet krijgt... dan gloeit het.
