Former Eredivisie coach compares Feyenoord defender to Geertruida: “Also comes into zones when crosses come from the left”
1 min readLast Sunday, PSV managed to win like their rivals Feyenoord during the sixth matchday in the Eredivisie. After a sluggish start, PSV ultimately won 4-1 against Sparta Rotterdam, and Feyenoord left nothing of PEC Zwolle intact (0-7).
At Feyenoord, right back Givairo Read was responsible for three assists. Read also made a good impression on former Eredivisie coach Ron Jans.
At NOS Studio Sport Football, Jans also draws a comparison with the current PSV player and former Feyenoorder Lutsharel Geertruida. Geertruida joined PSV last month on loan from RB Leipzig and, since his starting debut against Ajax (1-3) on 5 September of last month, seems to be hard to imagine out of PSV’s starting eleven.
''Read was very striking with three assists. He makes me think of Lutsharel Geertruida under Arne Slot. He also comes into the zones when crosses from the left are played, where he is simply an extra striker'', so says Jans.
Last summer, Read seemed on course to leave the Rotterdam club. Despite this, a transfer fell through, meaning the defender is still active at De Kuip.
According to the analyst, this is a good thing. ''I see a lot of boys going to a big club. Just a year or two too early. For him, it is a blessing to still be playing at Feyenoord for another year. Playing in the Champions League and maybe contending for the title,'' said the former coach.

Jans zegt dat het een zegen is dat Read nog een jaar bij Feyenoord blijft, omdat hij anders te vroeg naar een grote club gaat. Dat kan, maar ik denk ook dat PSV juist profijt heeft van dat type spelers, want Geertruida toont al dat je met slimme positionering in topvorm kunt komen. Kloppende jongen, alleen blijf scherp met de dekking als hij doorkomt. 🤔
Read 3 assists en Feyenoord die PEC Zwolle met 0-7 afmaakt, tja dan lijkt het systeem gewoon te kloppen. Maar ik wil wel zien of diezelfde Read ook zo sterk is wanneer PSV minder ruimte geeft en Feyenoord onder druk staat. 🔥
"Hij komt ook in zones bij voorzetten van de linkerkant" nou daar zeg je genoeg. Als we Geertruida dit gedrag laten kopiëren, dan krijgen tegenstanders echt hoofdpijn. Alleen bij PSV is de vraag, wie bezet dan zijn ruimte als hij weer inschuift? 👀⚽
Eens dat PSV geluk heeft gehad met Geertruida. Maar ik snap Jans ook wel hoor, Read deed gewoon 3 assists tegen PEC. Met zo veel directe dreiging op de rechterflank ga je Feyenoord niet makkelijk stoppen.
Die vergelijking met Geertruida klinkt wel logisch. Als Read echt die zones pakt bij voorzetten vanaf links, dan is het bijna een extra aanvaller, maar wel vanuit de rechterkant. Dat is precies het soort detail waar je punten mee pakt in de Eredivisie.
