First starting spot upcoming? | Next international withdraws
1 min readAfter Brian Brobbey, ex-PSV player Cody Gakpo has also dropped out of Oranje due to an injury. Gakpo had to go off early on Sunday during the visit to Serbia (1-2).
The winger was already replaced in the first half by PSV'er Ruben van Bommel. Now it is clear that Gakpo will not take the field again due to this injury when the Netherlands visits Greece next Thursday and plays again against Serbia on Sunday at the Philips Stadium.
With that statement, the KNVB makes its position known, and this is also confirmed by, among others, Voetbal International. ''Little is yet known about the severity of the injury of the former PSV player'', as VI writes.
What is clear, is that no replacement will be called up for Gakpo. Xavi, after all, still has in that position the former PSV player Noa Lang and Ruben van Bommel.

With Gakpo sidelined, the way to a first starting spot in Oranje for Ruben van Bommel seems to be possibly opening up. Van Bommel already came on in the last two international matches and made an excellent impression there, including a world-class assist against Germany (1-1).
Moreover, Van Bommel had a great chance last Sunday to score his first goal for the Netherlands national team. The left winger was played in with a ball laid wide by teammate Guus Til, but the forward saw his effort turned away and thereby failed to see Oranje extend their lead to 1-3.
Besides Gakpo and Brobbey, Donyell Malen and Justin Kluivert had already been ruled out earlier due to injuries, which meant, among other things, that PSV’s Guus Til was called up as a replacement. Last weekend it also became clear that PSV defender Lutsharel Geertruida had left the Oranje camp due to an injury.
Take care, Cody 🧡

Lmao if Ruben gets his first start it will be peak PSV to Oranje pipeline. But also, does anyone else see the irony that Guus Til can set him up and then it still stays 1-2... still, Ruben deserves the minutes.
Eens dat Noa Lang and Ruben are there, Xavi is not calling anyone else. Geertruida out too... ngl it feels like Oranje always has a new injury crisis at the worst time 😅
"Over de ernst van de blessure ... is nog weinig bekend" so this could still change, but i get the move now. Crazy how many forwards keep dropping, Oranje is basically rotating like PSV does.
Ruben doing well in the last 2 matches is exactly what you want. Van Bommel has that confidence, only annoying thing is he is left winger and still needs end product, that chance after Guus Til was big.
If Gakpo is out, Ruben van Bommel might finally get that start. That world assist vs Germany was not a fluke, he looks sharp in Oranje.
