Financial attack PSV on Ajax
1 min readPSV is on track to participate in the Club World Cup in 2029. That is what Voetbal International reports.
At the end of the 2027/2028 season, the participants in that club tournament will be announced. ''Thanks to a run of Champions League appearances in a row, PSV has favorable prospects to take part in the criticized but lucrative prestige project of FIFA chief Gianni Infantino'', so writes journalist Tom Knipping in VI.
Moreover, it is the case that starting with the upcoming season, 2027/2028, only the national champion participates directly in the UEFA Champions League. This season, the number 2 from last season (Feyenoord) also plays in the competitive phase, but next season the number 2 from the Netherlands must therefore play the preliminary round in order to qualify for the billion-dollar tournament.
Because of that, this season it is more important than ever to win the league title in order to be guaranteed, in any case, of extra millions from the UEFA Champions League. ''For now, the top clubs are assuming the same criteria as for the 2025 World Cup. At the time, Europe was allowed to enter twelve teams. It involved a mix of the Champions League winners and four-year coefficient scores over the period 2021-2024. Only the coefficient points achieved in the Champions League counted. Another restriction: a limit of two clubs per country, so that not only the usual suspects from the five top competitions stood a chance'', Knipping outlines.

Moreover, it is the case that with the next win in the billion-point race, PSV will be level on points with Atalanta Bergamo. The Italians are not taking part this season in the UEFA Champions League, and that is to PSV's advantage.
In addition, the results from 2025 are also of the utmost importance, as VI. ''If the rules remain intact, then the Champions League results in the period 2025-2028 will now be decisive. The first two finals in this cycle were won by Paris Saint-Germain, which of course is also listed among the best twelve on the four-year coefficient ranking. PSV is virtually fifteenth, but based on the limit of two teams per country, Atlético Madrid, Manchester City, Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa would drop out. On the revised ranking, PSV is number eleven, just behind Atalanta. Since the Italians are taking part in the Conference League this season and therefore cannot score points, PSV will close the gap with its next Champions League win. The first chasers are Club Brugge, AS Monaco and Benfica. Because AS Monaco (Conference League) and Benfica (Europa League), just like Atalanta, are missing from the Champions League, PSV will start to put these rivals further and further behind. Prolonging the league title (or becoming runners-up and surviving the preliminary rounds) would mean that PSV will take part in the entire qualification period in the Champions League. That should normally be enough for participation in the World Cup'', the outlet continues.
In the previous edition, Ajax just missed out on qualification, and the chance exists that PSV will put a financial offensive into play as well, also partly due to plans for the expansion of the Philips Stadium. ''Not only via the Club World Cup could PSV tap into a new source of income. After all, there are also plans to expand the Philips Stadium to a capacity comparable to the Johan Cruijff Arena. It all still seems a long way off for now, but on the horizon the outlines are already taking shape for an attack on the financial upper hand that Ajax traditionally has,'' VI concludes.
