Experienced PSV player reacts to the appointment of Xavi, who has nothing whatsoever to do with Dutch football: “If you’re going to pick a foreigner…”
1 min readFormer PSV player and experienced professional Boudewijn Zenden is surprised by the fact that Xavi Hernandez has been appointed by the KNVB as the new national team coach of the Netherlands. Earlier, the choice still seemed to be between former PSV player Michael Reiziger or the now 75-year-old Louis van Gaal.
Wednesday evening, finally, there was white smoke and, to the surprise of almost everyone, it was revealed that Xavi has signed a contract with the KNVB until the World Cup 2030. So too with Zenden.
In conversation with De Telegraaf, the former PSV player discusses the appointment of his former teammate at FC Barcelona. ''I was indeed surprised. That name was not mentioned in the first instance. A number of other names have been discussed over the past few days. Only today did that name suddenly come up. I didn't think that would happen so quickly. That's why it's extra surprising for me,'' says the former forward to the newspaper.
According to Zenden, Xavi is also someone who is connected to Dutch football. ''It is a completely different direction from the KNVB. Once again, no Dutch national team coach. If you are going to choose a foreigner anyway, then Xavi is someone who is precisely very closely linked to Dutch football,'' the former footballer continues.

The former assistant of Roger Schmidt at PSV also believes that Xavi's background at FC Barcelona could be of great influence. ''With his Barcelona background, he is a child of Dutch football because of the connections with coaches such as Johan Cruyff, Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard. That means you can say that he is the most Dutch of the foreign coaches'', according to Zenden.
Why Xavi is actually really connected to Dutch football, no one can really explain properly. The Catalan played for a long time at FC Barcelona and is a fan and supporter of Johan Cruijff, but at the same time he simply counts as a Spanish coach, a straightforward Spaniard. Never played in the Netherlands, never lived there, and so on.
The so-called football philosophy of FC Barcelona is used all over the world, but some in Catalonia actually think that it has something to do with Johan Cruijff’s vision. Oh well, people believe what they want to believe...
