Expected lineup against Serbia | The situation regarding Van Bommel and Til is becoming predictable
1 min readThe Netherlands national team plays Serbia in the Nations League on Sunday evening. Kick-off is at 6 p.m. in Belgrade.
In the Serbian capital, the second duel for Oranje under the leadership of new national coach Xavi Hernandez is on the calendar. Xavi made his debut last Thursday with a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam against Germany. It is still anyone’s guess what the starting lineup will be, but it is starting to become clear how things stand around Ruben van Bommel.
Against Germany, Ruben van Bommel and Van Bommel were immediately good for an assist in injury time to former PSV player Cody Gakpo. This prevented a defeat during the debut of the former world footballer.
In the forefront, the Spanish training coach must make a change against Serbia in any case since striker Brian Brobbey was injured against Die Mannschaft. During that match, Brobbey was replaced by AZ striker Mexx Meerdink and is therefore not there.

Despite this, the expectation is that Van Bommel will start on the bench just like last Thursday. Cody Gakpo and Crysencio Summerville will presumably start again out wide, while Meerdink appears to begin as the centre-forward from kickoff.
In midfield, it is expected that former PSV player Joey Veerman, who made a strong impression last Thursday during his return as a substitute, will get a place in the starting lineup, and that would then be at the expense of Quinten Timber. Alongside Veerman, Ryan Gravenberch and Tijani Reijnders will also start in midfield.
In defense, it seems Xavi will not be making any changes. That means the center will be formed by Jean-Paul van Hecke and Virgil van Dijk, while Denzel Dumfries and Micky van de Ven will play as full-backs and Bart Verbruggen will be again standing between the posts.
Possible starting line-up Netherlands against Serbia: Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Hecke, Van Dijk, Van de Ven; Veerman, Gravenberch, Reijnders; Summerville, Meerdink, Gakpo

Meerdink als spits i.p.v.
Veerman + Gravenberch + Reijnders sounds fine, but with Van Bommel on the bench we lose a direct spark.
Meerdink in the center from kickoff feels like the only logical move after Brobbey out. But taking Veerman for Timber, i think thats actually a risk, Timber can control the tempo way better imo 👀
If Van Bommel again starts on the bench, ngl i get it but its still weird. That assist vs Gakpo in stoppage time was pure clutch, you should reward that 🔥.
