ESPN analysts praise the debut: “He is the future”
1 min readRuben van Bommel made an excellent Oranje debut on Thursday evening. Van Bommel was responsible for the assist for Cody Gakpo's 1-1.
That was also seen by analysts Bram van Polen and Kenneth Perez from ESPN. Perez thought that Van Bommel had an excellent substitute appearance and was very complimentary in the program Voetbalpraat.
''I like it when we see Eredivisie players go up on a stage like this and just do it. That you don’t have to think: 'oh shit, this doesn’t look right''', says the Dane.
The former footballer receives praise for it from fellow analyst Bram van Polen, but at the same time Van Polen sees a problem arising on the left winger position. ''He’s a top player in the making. I really think so. He has so many facets. But you do have to deal with Cody Gakpo, who is normally really a safe bet on the left,'' says the former right-back.

After that, Perez adds that Gakpo at Liverpool FC also sometimes starts from the right side. ''Only there you also have Summerville. His specific qualities are something that has brought extra to the Netherlands national team'', the former midfielder says.
Subsequently, the Dane is once again full of praise for Van Bommel and a great future is therefore predicted for him as well. ''Van Bommel is the future. It is incredibly great to see how a footballer has become a much better version of himself through the worst injury there is'', the analyst says.
Finally, there is discussion about what Xavi’s front line should look like now that Van Bommel is clearly knocking on the door. “You don’t want to get in the way of Van Bommel’s development, but Gakpo, so to speak, could still play in that position for almost ten years. In my opinion, Gakpo has played in the striker role at PSV more than once; that could be an option,” Van Polen said.
