ESPN analyst points to Joey Veerman: “It hit him.”

The midfielder was still active during the 2024 European Championship in Germany. There, the Netherlands reached the semi-final in which England ultimately proved too strong, winning 1-2.
After that tournament, Veerman was never selected by Koeman again. Ahead of the World Cup last summer in North America, the former PSV player was also openly at odds with the then national team coach.
Now a new era has dawned with Xavi Hernandez on the touchline and the Spaniard decided to call Veerman back up to the great joy of Hans Kraay Jr. ESPN analyst reports this to Voetbal International.

Next, the analyst pulls up the stats of the midfielder from last season at PSV. ''In the past season, that data showed that Joey Veerman has won an incredible amount of balls. He has been working on that day and night; Borussia Dortmund has noticed it too, and there he happily continues with short through balls, deep passes, and almost everything forward,'' continues the former footballer.
In the end, Kraay believes that Xavi has an important role in store for the former PSV player. “Meanwhile, Frenkie in our country is getting a bit of the label of a ‘ball carrier,’ which really goes too far for me, but the same Frenkie isn’t there in this cycle, so… it wouldn’t surprise me if Xavi Veerman lets him start as the first passing option in midfield in Frenkie’s spot,” the ESPN analyst said.

Als Xavi hem als eerste aanspeelpunt laat starten op het "plekkie van Frenkie", dan ben ik benieuwd. Frenkie is balcontrole, Veerman is meer direct vooruit en baljagen. Hopelijk wordt dat geen misfit.
Frenkie "balletje breed" etiket of niet, dit stuk voelt alsof Xavi Veerman klaarzet voor de controle-rol. Als hij echt als startpunt op het middenveld staat, dan wordt PSV-jongen gewoon weer gevaarlijk opbouwen... en daar ben ik dan ook wel bang voor. 💀
"Het heeft hem geraakt" - fair. Maar imo is het vooral die arbeid die hem terug op de radar zette. 2-3 passjes vooruit en balveroveren, dat is precies wat PSV-je vaak ook verwachtte van hem.
Dat die Oostenrijk-wedstrijd zo'n stempel kreeg is echt bizar. Ja Koeman liet hem vallen, maar inhoudelijk was Veerman allang bezig zich te verbeteren. Nu met die cijfers over ballen veroveren en zijn korte steekballetjes, dit kan gewoon een go-to speler worden. 👀

Die Oostenrijk-wedstrijd als omslagpunt snap ik wel. Na "niet meer opgeroepen" voelt het als een grote mentale tik, en dan zo terugkomen in Oranje is echt verdiend.
Tbh logisch dat Kraay zegt dat het hem geraakt heeft. Veerman kreeg in die periode echt een soort stigma, en nu zie je dat hij het weer terugvecht met cijfers en energie. 🐐
Tbh Kraay zegt gewoon het soort dingen dat we bij PSV ook zagen: die balveroveringen zijn niet toeval. Als Veerman onder Xavi weer de rol krijgt als eerste aanspeelpunt, dan gaat Nederland echt meer tempo maken.
