ESPN analyst not convinced by the PSV penalty and gets a lot of backlash
1 min readPSV won last Sunday 5-1 against FC Groningen despite an early 0-1 deficit. At halftime, Peter Bosz's team led 3-1, partly thanks to a converted penalty by Ricardo Pepi.
PSV was awarded this penalty when referee Allard Lindhout was called to the screen by VAR due to a foul by Mark Csinger on Guus Til. Csinger made an attempt to block Til's attempt, after which the defender landed his foot on the midfielder's ankle.
For VAR, this was a reason to call Lindhout onto the pitch, and the referee subsequently placed the ball on the spot. In the end, Pepi provided a 3-1 halftime score by converting this penalty.
In the program Dit Was Het Weekend on ESPN, analysts Kenneth Perez and Marciano Vink got into a discussion with each other about this penalty. ''Football has to remain a sport where you dare to make a slide. You don’t want defenders to start pulling their legs back during duels, the way they also do their hands behind their back'', Vink says, who then receives a lot of backlash on social media.

Analyst Perez disagrees with that. ''I'm glad that this kind of situation is punished with a penalty. Doesn't he not touch the ball at all here? This teaches players to have control over their movements'', says the native Dane.
Yet Vink remains with his opinion. ''Then you were therefore not a defender. You don't always have control over the spot where your foot lands during a block. This also happens at a high level, in the Premier League'', the former footballer answers Perez.
Perez, however, sticks to his position. ''Til nearly breaks his ankle here. It's a reckless intervention. His timing is also completely wrong. He misses the ball entirely'', the analyst said.
