ESPN analyst expects a thrilling showdown: “But I expect PSV to become champions again.”

For the PhD candidate SC Cambuur and Excelsior, it is an honor on Friday evening to kick off the 2026/2027 Eredivisie season. PSV starts the pursuit of the fourth consecutive national title on Saturday with a home match against Fortuna Sittard.

Peter Bosz’s team became the earliest champions in Eredivisie history last season when Feyenoord, on 5 April, could not go beyond a 0-0 draw at FC Volendam. The day before, PSV had won 4-3 at home against FC Utrecht and thus the 27th national title was officially a fact.

ESPN analysts Kees Kwakman and Karim El Ahmadi think that Bosz’s team will also take home the trophy this season. Both analysts say so in the program Voetbalpraat on ESPN.

Kwakman indicates, however, that everything can still change until 2 September with regard to outgoing transfers. ''Looking at last year, the gap was still very large. In fact, you should only look around September, once the squads are complete, then you have a better picture. If at PSV Pepi, Veerman and Dest still leave at the end of August'', said Kwakman.

El Ahmadi was league champion with Feyenoord as a player in 2016/2017, and recalls that Ajax had already dropped the necessary points at the start of the season. “In the year we became champions, we had luck, because Ajax only brought in the big names in September. It became quite exciting at the end, but they had already lost points at the beginning,” the former footballer still remembers.

Then the analyst points to PSV as league champions. ''I have PSV. I do expect other clubs such as Feyenoord or Ajax to be in the running for a long time, but I expect that PSV will be champions again,'' says El Ahmadi without any doubt.

Former PSV player Danny Koevermans, however, expects that Ajax will end up taking the championship and points to technical director Jordi Cruyff. ''Because the transfer mayhem still really surprises me, I’m putting my money on Ajax and I think they’ll run off with the gold'', said Koevermans.
