Earnie Stewart looks back on a million-euro transfer: “Those were good conversations”

1 min read

Last summer Ismael Saibari left PSV for FC Bayern Munich. Saibari left for 55 million euros to Der Rekordmeister.

With that, the midfielder capped a dream season he had at PSV. The Moroccan international grew into an important link for PSV and excelled in particular in the partnership that was formed with Guus Til.

Moreover, Saibari played a strong group-stage at the World Cup in North America with Morocco. In all three group matches, the departing PSV player was on target, and partly because of that, FC Bayern came calling at PSV.

In the series Here in the South, technical director Earnest Stewart looks back on the transfer of Saibari. ''What’s good comes quickly. At a certain point ahead of the World Cup, we were told that Bayern Munich would be interested in Saibari. From what we could tell from them, they really wanted to close the deal before the World Cup,'' Stewart says to the camera of PSV Play.

Eventually, the deal became public when Saibari was still active with Morocco at the World Cup and, in the round of sixteen, personally ensured that the Netherlands national team was eliminated. The Netherlands, after all, lost in the round of sixteen to Morocco on penalties, and the midfielder scored the winning penalty.

In the round of 16 against Canada (0-3), Saibari went off injured early and that cost the midfielder the quarterfinal against France. That stop was also the end of the road for Morocco, as the French were too strong with a 2-0 victory.

In the end, both clubs found each other quickly in the negotiations and ultimately the Germans were also willing to pay the requested amount. ''In that regard, it were very harmonious talks and it didn’t take much time to get it done. Also the amount that we, as PSV, wanted, Bayern Munich also wanted to pay. Those were good talks. And if it happens before the World Cup, then you can somewhat anticipate what the rest of the transfer window will look like'', the American said.
