Despite the call, realism prevails: “Of course, that’s quite remarkable.”

Ruben van Bommel may be set to make his debut for Oranje. Even so, there is for the time being no reason for an exuberant celebration.

That says Van Bommel in an interview with Voetbal International. The left winger of PSV can, after fourteen years, follow in the footsteps of his father Mark van Bommel as an international and, moreover, grandpa Bert van Marwijk also played an international for the Netherlands national team (3-0 defeat against Yugoslavia).

To journalist Martijn Krabbendam of VI, the PSV player tells more about the invitation the forward received from Xavi Hernandez. '''Congratulations on your selection', I got back. More than enough. I saw my parents and brother and sister briefly afterward as well, but I had to leave again soon. We’re not really a family that goes on to celebrate something like that extensively with cake or anything,', Van Bommel says.

Yet the young wing forward realizes that something special awaits him when he actually makes his debut for the Netherlands national team. Then Van Bommel is, in fact, the first footballer in history who, just like his father and grandfather, comes into action for Oranje.

''Of course that's quite special, but I don't think it's a reason to celebrate. To do that, you have to win something. Although my father played for the Netherlands national team for a long time and as a child I went along quite often, it's still not comparable to when you yourself get selected. It's all new; you have to take a look at how everything works and adjust yourself'', continues the PSV player.

The left winger also knows that the invitation didn’t come entirely out of the blue. ''‘I don’t want to say that I really expected it, but of course I’m in a good phase after my injury. So I did know there was a chance I could be able to sit in, but if that then actually happens, that’s really very nice'', Van Bommel explains.

Van Bommel also talks about the first days in Zeist. ''I'm only just there, but we speak a different language, which of course is different from when you’re with the Netherlands national team. But at the same time, it isn’t a problem. I think all the players communicate in English at their clubs. At PSV, the working languages are Dutch and English, so everyone knows what you have to do. Further, in terms of communication and training, I do see some differences between the national coach and the Dutch coaches I’ve had, without going into the details. But that’s logical again, because the coach is Spanish and brings those influences along. In the end, it’s all about one thing: as long as the message gets across,'' says the forward.

Finally, the newly appointed international refuses to be euphoric for too long about his call-up. ''Of course I'm pretty proud of myself, how everything went, how my career is progressing, and how I bounced back from that knee injury, but, yeah: you shouldn't go flying, you know. I never stay too long in euphoria'', Van Bommel said.
