Despite and impressed: “You could already see it at the first ball contact”

1 min read

Bert van Marwijk saw last week grandson Ruben van Bommel make his debut for Oranje. Van Bommel was immediately good for a world-class assist.

Thanks to this match-winning assist in stoppage time for former PSV player Cody Gakpo, Xavi Hernandez made his debut as head coach of the Netherlands with a 1-1 draw against Germany. Van Marwijk was present at the Johan Cruijff Arena and thus saw his grandson make his debut for the Netherlands 51 years after the debut of the former national coach.

The one-time Oranje international saw that his grandson was not bothered by nerves. ''There was no tension with Ruben. You could already see that with the first ball touch'', Van Marwijk says to the Limburg broadcaster L1.

In the 83rd minute, Van Bommel sent Crysencio Summerville off, and that meant that for the first time in fourteen years there was again a Van Bommel in the Netherlands national team. Father Mark was last on 13 June 2012 in an Oranje shirt on the pitch, when the Netherlands, in the second group match at the EURO in Poland & Ukraine, lost 1-2 to Germany.

Van Bommel's assist for Ruben has also won more than praise from Van Marwijk. ''That was so good, at that speed'', says the former national coach.

Afterwards, the former football coach spoke once more with his grandson. ''Yes, it hasn’t gone unnoticed. We spoke with Ruben for a moment after the match in the players' lounge. He is usually very level-headed, but I could tell that he was extra happy,'' said Van Marwijk.
