Despite a strong impression, still some doubt about Joey Veerman
1 min readFormer PSV player Joey Veerman is back with Oranje after an absence of two years. Earlier, Veerman had been out of the picture under former national team coach Ronald Koeman.
After the Euro 2024, the then-PSV player no longer took action for the Netherlands national team. Koeman cited, among other reasons, the character of the midfielder as one of the factors for not selecting Veerman, shortly before the World Cup last summer.
Now that with Xavi Hernandez a new wind is blowing in Zeist, the former PSV player is also back in the mix. For journalist Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf, this is nothing more than logical, while colleague Valentijn Driessen still has a few reservations.
''Do you know what the biggest advantage of Joey Veerman is? Valentijn can no longer say: 'Yes, it was only against Fortuna Sittard', or 'Yes, it was only against SC Cambuur. Veerman now seems to have already fought his way into the starting lineup at Borussia Dortmund, and he’s also just playing really well'', says Verweij in the podcast Kick-off of De Telegraaf.

After that, the journalist points to BVB’s Champions League duel against Villarreal CF. ''There were also stats from his Champions League match; it just looked genuinely very good. Everyone knows that Veerman can play football, but he only has to...'', says Verweij, after which Driessen interjects. ''Mike, that was against Villarreal in the Champions League. Have you seen where they are in La Liga? They’re almost at the bottom.''
Then the 'master predictor' points to the Bundesliga. ''Mike is talking about the German league, but on Thursday Hoffenheim lost to OFI Crete. 2-0. The always tricky OFI Crete... What are we even talking about, man?! Come on, say! Villarreal is just doing very poorly! You can surely put that on the table? Everyone is marching along, because Veerman hits the ball well twice for Borussia Dortmund. And one of those was against Villarreal'', Driessen concludes.
