De Telegraaf predicts: “Under Van Bommel, will there be a fixed value after all?”
1 min readPSV icon Mark van Bommel started last week his adventure as head coach of Belgium. In Rome, Italy was beaten 0-2.
Thereby, Van Bommel got an excellent start with our southern neighbors. Former Ajax player Mika Godts also scored against the Italians to make it 0-1.
Godts was still missing from Belgium's World Cup squad last summer, but as he is therefore part of the Belgian selection under the former PSV player. That is also seen by journalist Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf.
''In Belgium, that previous coach Garcia is going to get told off because he didn’t bring Godts along. There was a reason for that, because Belgium’s left-wing position was already quite well filled. Only they should have made Godts taste the World Cup, bring him along'', Verweij said in the Kick-off podcast by De Telegraaf.

The journalist also dares to predict that the winger will become a mainstay under the former PSV captain, and this also points to the opening goal against Italy. ''Now you can see what he does; that was a great goal. Godts is going to be a regular player under Van Bommel'', the reporter said.
Also colleague Valentijn Driessen joins in and points at Van Bommel. ''He praised himself for a moment. The team was now already doing what he wanted'', says Driessen, who then goes on to the fact that the born Maasbrachter decided last year not to step into anything because of his son Ruben's severe injury. ''He has experienced it himself too and knows how important it is to have people around you who know how something like this works. That is one of the considerations Van Bommel made in not starting another adventure last year'', the journalist concludes.

I like the nuance from Driessen, the part about Van Bommel understanding the importance of having people around you. On the football side, though, I'd wait before calling Godts a "fixed value" until he plays the same minutes and impact against tougher sides. One strong game is promising, not proven yet.
Valentijn Driessen on Van Bommel not jumping in last year because of Ruben hit me tbh. That context makes his calm, pragmatic coaching at PSV-era make more sense too. Now use that experience and build Belgium around what works, Godts included.
Lol PSV always wants the out-going story to be a success story. Still, 0-2 vs Italy and Godts scoring is not small stuff. If Belgium really builds around him, then we might see him back in top form 🚀
"De ploeg deed nu al wat hij wilde", yeah because Van Bommel had a clean start. Im curious if Belgium can keep that intensity when the plan gets tested. Also respect to Mark for not rushing into anything last year, that Ruben situation is heavy.
"Godts gaat onder Van Bommel wel een vaste waarde worden" ik snap de hype, maar eerst zien dan geloven. Belgium kan in toernooi-stand altijd omschakelen, dus afhankelijk van de wedstrijd kan hij ook weer op de bank belanden. Toch die 0-1 zegt genoeg 👀.
Garcia got "op zijn donder" for not bringing Godts to the WK, fair point tbh. If he can slot in quickly like in Rome, then that decision aged badly. Goated that PSV connection is paying off again 😍
The De Telegraaf take is spicy but i get it. Godts scoring and Van Bommel giving him structure could be the perfect combo for Belgium. If he becomes a regular there, PSV gets another reminder how right we were.
Verweij saying "Godts goes under Van Bommel wel een vaste waarde worden" sounds good, but im not fully convinced. Italy is not the same level as the bigger tournament opponents, so let's see consistency over a few matches. Still, that goal looked really smart.
If Godts becomes a "vaste waarde" under Van Bommel, that's huge for his development. But i still wonder if Belgium will use him the right way, because one injury and youre done with momentum. PSV should be monitoring that role closely 👀
