Candid about the move to PSV: “I also had to make the wisest decision.”
1 min readKodai Sano has been officially a PSV player for ten days now after the club reached an agreement with NEC regarding the transfer of the Japanese player to Eindhoven. Sano therefore decided not to take action anymore for the Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie in the match away to Olympiakos (0-0) in the Champions League qualifying round.
In conversation with De Telegraaf, the midfielder addresses why he decided to stop taking action on behalf of NEC. The Japanese player calls it a difficult decision for himself as well.
''I have so much to thank NEC for. The club has been so good to me. But I also had to make the most sensible decision for my career,'' says the newly signed PSV player.
After it became clear that PSV and NEC had reached an agreement, the Japanese player did not want to take the risk of a possible serious injury. 'There had already been opportunities to make a transfer earlier, but every time it didn't go through. And now there was an agreement. Did I then have to play anyway, with the risk that I would pick up an injury and that the transfer would still not go through?' Sano continues.

In addition, at that time the midfielder was more focused on his move to PSV than on NEC’s match. ''I decided not to do that, also because my head wasn’t fully in it. What would happen if I made a big mistake because of it? I decided not to take that risk, but that wasn’t an easy decision,'' says the Japanese player.
The PSV player indicated to coach Dick Schreuder that he wanted to fly back to the Netherlands and this caused irritation for Schreuder. ''It was difficult to tell him that, because I have so much appreciation for Dick. He has been very important to my development. His way of playing football matches well with my qualities. But I'm also grateful to Rogier Meijer for all the opportunities he has given me'', Sano says.
The Japanese player saw that his old club friend and enemy managed to surprise them by taking Olympiakos out at home, meaning Schreuder's team will be in action on Wednesday evening during the play-offs of the billion-dollar tournament against the Norwegian side FK Bodø/Glimt. ''I'm very happy for everyone at NEC and I'm grateful for the great time I had in Nijmegen. I've learned a lot,'' said Sano.
