Breakthrough at the KNVB next?: “All signs suggest they’re going to fully commit to him”
1 min readThe KNVB has been without a national team coach for more than a month after Ronald Koeman announced he was stepping down when Oranje were eliminated at the World Cup in North America by Morocco. Earlier, PSV coach Peter Bosz, Erik ten Hag, and Arne Slot had already closed the door to the role of national team coach.
Earlier this week, news emerged that Louis van Gaal would be interested in speaking with the KNVB about a fourth term as national team coach. Last month, Martijn Krabbendam, a journalist for Voetbal International, said on Vandaag Inside Oranje that former PSV player Michael Reiziger is the KNVB’s dream candidate.
Now Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf reports that the KNVB is going all in on the appointment of Reiziger as national coach. Verweij says this in the podcast Kick-off from De Telegraaf.
''In fact... bringing Michael Reiziger in as national team coach is a no-brainer for the KNVB. He really wants to become national team coach and it looks very much like they are going to throw everything at him'', says the journalist without a doubt.
Still, according to Verweij, it will take quite a while before Reiziger is officially presented, and that has to do with the fact that Van Gaal has indicated that he is always willing to help the KNVB. ''I think the KNVB is a bit scared by that. Of course it's strange that they didn't know that themselves. I think they want to let Van Gaal's storm blow over before they appoint Reiziger. There has still been no contact between the KNVB and Van Gaal'', the reporter says.
According to the journalist, the former PSV player is going to have a hard time convincing Dutch football fans. ''Michael Reiziger is going to be put in a very unpleasant situation as national team coach. All of the Netherlands has an opinion about him, one that is not very positive, but he hasn't actually done anything wrong himself. It's by no means a foregone conclusion that a good club coach will do well with Oranje'', Verweij said.

"Het heeft er alle schijn van dat ze vol gaan inzetten op hem" is lekker stellig, maar waarom is er dan nog geen contact met Van Gaal? Dat zegt mij dat de KNVB zelf ook geen grip heeft op de planning. i ben benieuwd of Reiziger het vertrouwen gaat krijgen, of dat ze hem slopen zodra hij één slechte interland heeft. 🔥
Eens, maar wel met voorwaarden. Als Reiziger komt moet hij durven snijden, niet alleen "droomkandidaat" roepen. Anders krijg je zo'n seizoen waar iedereen al bij voorbaat moppert. 💀⚽
Reiziger als bondscoach is peak scenario voor de jeugd, maar alleen als ze hem vrijheid geven. Als ze wachten tot "de storm van Van Gaal" overwaait, dan duurt het gedoe te lang. 🔥💀
Michael Reiziger heeft als ex-PSV'er best wat krediet, maar ik snap de twijfel wel. Oranje vraagt om man-management en wedstrijdmentaliteit, niet alleen een idee van voetbal. Anders wordt elke misstap meteen een discussie over zijn verleden.
Ik snap die hoop op een tacticus, maar Verweij heeft wel een punt: Nederland heeft een mening over Reiziger zonder dat iedereen iets concreets ziet. Het probleem is dat Oranje niet hetzelfde is als PSV, daar moet je binnen weken resultaat en vorm leveren. Als ze echt wachten tot de storm van Van Gaal overwaait is dat puur politieke tijdrekken.
"abc'tje" klinkt lekker, maar KNVB praat te vaak te snel. Als er geen contact is met van Gaal, dan is dit gewoon boardroom chaos en dan moet Reiziger het oplossen. bruh.

tbh dit voelt als PSV-linkjes trekken en hopen dat het lukt. Reiziger is tactisch slim, maar Oranje is meteen pressure cooker, zeker als ze Van Gaal eerst nog even laten "waaien". 👀
Reiziger als bondscoach voelt voor mij als KNVB die voor 'middenweg' gaat. Bosz/ten Hag/Slot zijn ook al afgewezen, dus dan maar weer een oud-PSV'er... Maar ja, frictie is groot bij Oranje fans. Als ze hem echt willen, moeten ze wel meteen doorpakken.
