Bizarre numbers and successes of PSV

1 min read

Next Sunday, PSV will begin the 2026/2027 season with the battle for the Johan Cruijff Shield. At 6 p.m., Peter Bosz’s team will kick off in the Philips Stadium against the Cup winner AZ. PSV can put forward bizarre successes and figures when it comes to the matches for the Johan Cruijff Shield.

Last season, PSV won the Johan Cruyff Shield for the fifteenth time, and the club is therefore the record holder when it comes to won Super Cups. Since the turn of the century, PSV has competed in the duel for the Johan Cruyff Shield no fewer than eighteen times.

In the 2000/2001 season, PSV under the leadership of Eric Gerets secured this trophy by winning 2-0 against Bekerwinner Roda JC Kerkrade. The following season, PSV won this prize once again by defeating FC Twente 3-2.

In the 2002/2003 season, PSV under Guus Hiddink lost the match 3-1 to the double-winner Ajax, and in 2003/2004 PSV won 3-1 against the Cup winner FC Utrecht. In 2005/2006 (1-2), 2006/2007 (3-1) and 2007/2008 (1-0) PSV each time lost to Ajax.

In 2008/2009, PSV took the Johan Cruijff Shield again after five years by winning 0-2 against cup winner Feyenoord, and it ultimately lasted until 2012/2013 before PSV would be allowed to compete for the trophy again. Under the leadership of Dick Advocaat, reigning champions Ajax were beaten 4-2.

In the seasons 2015/2016 and 2016/2017, they won against FC Groningen (0-3) and Feyenoord (0-1). The latter was lost in 2018/2019 on penalties and in 2019/2020 Ajax, as double winners, proved too strong for PSV with 2-0.

From 2021/2022 to 2023/2024, PSV were allowed to call themselves winners of the Johan Cruyff Shield three times in a row by winning twice against Ajax (0-4 & 3-5) and thanks to a 0-1 victory over Feyenoord during the official debut of Peter Bosz as coach of PSV. In 2024/2025, PSV once again had to bow from the penalty spot for Feyenoord in a spectacular duel.

Achievements of PSV this century in the Johan Cruyff Shield:
11 wins
5 defeats
2 draws within 90 minutes (loss after penalty shootouts)

"11 overwinningen5 nederlagen2 gelijke spelen binnen 90 minuten" is cool, maar ik ben wel bang voor AZ, die wedstrijden zijn nooit echt simpel. Fr is dit weer zo een sfeer- en drukding in het Philips Stadion? 👀

tbh that 0-1 on Bosz official debut vs Feyenoord still gives me goosebumps... and now we face AZ again, same trophy stress. Curious how he handles the game management because those "bizarre successen" only happen when PSV stays sharp.

Those numbers are insane, 11 wins with only 5 losses in 18 matches since the 2000s is elite mentality. If Bosz sets up like he means it, AZ will have a tough night at Philips, no doubt 🔥🐐

15e supercup is echt ziek, recordstatus blijft top. Maar kijkend naar de cijfers binnen 90 minuten, 11 winst en slechts 2 gelijk zegt genoeg, we gaan ze echt moeten afmaken tegen AZ.
