Analysts point to a summer PSV transfer: 'That’s also worth a lot'
1 min readLast week, PSV introduced Sam Lammers as the club’s new striker since it was keen to add another striker due to Alassane Pléa’s injury. Lammers had also ended up on the sidelines at FC Twente, partly because of the arrival of Wout Weghorst.
Former football coach Gertjan Verbeek believes that the brand-new PSV player, who was still not included in the match squad last Saturday, could be of great value to Peter Bosz’s team. Verbeek says this in the program De Oosttribune on RTV Oost.
''I’m happy for Lammers that he has found a way out and that he ends up at a great club. FC Twente has also gotten a bit more for it than what they paid for him. I still think that’s quite impressive'', the former coach of among others AZ and Feyenoord says to the regional TV station.
Still, Verbeek also adds a critical note about the transition involving Lammers. ''On the other hand, I don't think the way it happened is worth top marks. That is mainly down to FC Twente. The fact that you promote him to third striker and that he now goes to PSV,'' the analyst continues.

In addition, Verbeek believes that Lammers will be able to get a lot more playing time at least in part due to PSV’s busy schedule. ''I think he can be of a lot of value at PSV. PSV plays a lot of matches. He may not always be able to play entire matches, but at the moment when he came on as a substitute or took part while at FC Twente, it was indeed a team that was playing well. He wasn’t really the target man, but he was the striker who made others play better. That is also worth a great deal,'' says the former coach.
Team analyst Jan van der Staa shares Verbeek’s vision and also points to Peter Bosz’s style of play. ''At FC Twente they had a different vision. They signed Weghorst. That’s the guy who’s supposed to make it happen. I’m happy that Lammers is going to PSV in terms of football. They’re there very often on the opponent’s half, in the combination. He fits in there as well'', said Van der Staa.
Journalist Tijmen van Wissing also has his opinion on the transfer of Lammers and the conduct of FC Twente. ''Ten Hag has, in my view, been very clear. He has said: We didn’t score enough goals last year. That’s how he thinks. And so he opts for Weghorst. And they really have a lot of confidence in Vennegoor or Hesselink. That guy needs to have perspective, because last year he actually didn’t really feature. It’s a risk they’re taking. But I also think it might be, from a business-economic standpoint, an irresponsible risk to keep Lammers, who is still generating two million now, plus earning a salary that is also around a million. So that’s simply three million on the balance sheet for a third striker'', concludes Van Wissing.
