Against Serbia–the Netherlands, it goes: “I’ll probably be in the starting lineup more often.”
1 min readOrange booked Sunday evening their first win under Xavi Hernandez. In Belgrade, they won 1-2 against Serbia.
For the Netherlands national team, Mexx Meerdink was good for two goals, and in the last one PSV player Guus Til provided an assist. Former PSV midfielder Joey Veerman also provided the assist with an excellent pass to Til, after which Meerdink managed to put the 1-2 away.
Afterwards, Joey Veerman was also praised by NOS analysts Rafael van der Vaart and Theo Janssen. ''Veerman is exceptionally the right fit for the very best. Now he also proves at Dortmund that he did indeed need to take a step in order to take another one'', Van der Vaart says in the NOS studio after the match.
Then, the former midfielder thinks that Veerman is going to play a big role under Xavi. ''With the Bundesliga and with Dortmund, you also have better players around you. That was something you could see today. He is really an Xavi player and I think he will be in the starting lineup more often,'' said the former international.

Colleague Janssen is also impressed by the former PSV player, and attention is also drawn to the playing style of the Spanish coach. ''He has a great ball between the lines, not that hard. Then you still have a bit of space so you can open up and accelerate again'', concludes the former footballer, who among other clubs played for Vitesse and FC Twente.

Guus Til finally gets rewarded, love to see it. If Xavi is cooking with players like Veerman, PSV fans should be feeling pretty confident about what comes next ❤️⚽
I like that Xavi uses the "between the lines, not too hard" idea, but lets be real, we also need better defensive control. Still, this match felt like Netherlands had a plan.
That first touch and the timing of the pass on Til was elite 👀. Wenn Veerman starts more, Meerdink will get even more chances, guaranteed.
Idk about that "step needed at Dortmund" comment, but you could see the quality in the build up. With Xavi's style, Veerman gets space to turn and accelerate and that suits his game a lot.
"Passend is Veerman bij uitstek allerbeste." tbh that through-ball he played for Til was pure class 🔥. Want him starting more, even if it means rotating less.
Two goals for Meerdink and Til with an assist, PSV is in everything. If Veerman is really an Xavi-type player, that's scary good for the future.
