After an excellent debut, it sounds like: “This is how I want to play every match.”
1 min readMark van Bommel made his debut last Friday as head coach of Belgium. In Rome, they won 0-2 against Italy.
With that, the PSV icon had an excellent debut as a coach for the Red Devils. In addition, Van Bommel is also praising the players’ group that the trainer has at his disposal.
That is what the former PSV captain lets Belgian media know during a press conference, in which there is also a look back at the win against Italy. ''That is how I want to play every match. For me, it starts with intensity and willingness. Then football has to come along'', Van Bommel says.
Then the former PSV player says, in a way, that he is surprised that the Belgian players pick up on his style of play so quickly. ''I found it difficult beforehand to gauge how fast you can convey your ideas if you only have three days. But these are players of a high level. They take things in very quickly,'' continues the national team coach of De Rode Duivels.

Then the native Maasbrachter continues. ''Of course I had expectations for this group, but they also really show themselves to be very intelligent. In those first 45 minutes against Italy you could see what we had discussed. Then you’re proud as a coach. I’m currently extremely satisfied. There is good training, the level is high and there is fun,'' Van Bommel said.

0-2 tegen Italië is peak start 💯⚽
"Supertevreden" is deserved after a debut, but the real test is consistency. Give it a few matches and we will see if that intensity stays or turns into a short peak. 🔥
The quote about "twee dingen" is spot on: intensity + willingness, then the football. But im curious if Belgium will dominate possession too, or if they are more of a transition team under him.
I agree with the intelligence part, those first 45 minutes apparently looked like they had rehearsed. If Belgium can keep that training level, they will go far.
Three days and they already buy into the ideas? That speaks volumes about the players. Still, i wanna see how Belgium look after a tougher press, not just against Italy in friendly-ish rhythm.
"Zo wil ik elke wedstrijd spelen." bruh that's a promise, i like it. As long as they keep that intensity without burning the team out.
0-2 in Rome on debut, thats massive. Van Bommel sounds like he wants intensity first and then the football, which is exactly the PSV DNA.
