1 min readJust like PSV, Ajax is also preparing for the first top match of the 2026/2027 season in the Eredivisie. This summer, the Amsterdam club underwent a major overhaul and, in addition, technical director Jordi Cruijff recruited player after player.
In an interview with ESPN, Cruijff said that he believes he has bridged the gap with PSV. Last year, the capital club still finished the Eredivisie with a gap of a street-length behind PSV.
At the press conference ahead of Ajax - PSV, the Spanish coach Michel looked ahead to this match and there was also a look back at the transfer summer. ''I am absolutely delighted. We have a squad with enough quality. We have picked players whose style of play fits our philosophy. That means they can adapt quickly. It is important that we get to know each other well and have a good connection,'' the Spaniard tells, quoted by De Telegraaf.
The head coach also believes that, unlike last season, Ajax is able to compete for the prizes on three fronts. ''There are still plenty of things to improve, but we have the whole season to do that,'' Michel continues.
Finally, the Spaniard hopes for support from the Johan Cruijff Arena. ''We play at home and we need the fans. It is a great test to see where we stand. PSV plays well upfront and has a fantastic depth. We want to be dominant and will try to push them back. That is the key'', the coach concludes about his game plan against PSV, which is perhaps not exactly realistic given the difference in strength between the two teams.

Michel heeft inhoud: selectie die aansluit bij filosofie en snel klikken, dat klinkt logisch. Alleen PSV heeft juist een wapen tegen dominantie, namelijk wie ruimte laat, krijgt direct diepte terug. Ik denk dat het spelbeeld pas duidelijk wordt na de eerste 20 minuten, wie controle pakt bij de tweede bal 💯
"Wij willen dominant zijn en gaan ze proberen naar achteren te drukken." Kom op, dat zeggen ze al jaren. Als ze echt spelers hebben die qua speelstijl passen, moeten ze ook laten zien dat ze tegen ons tempo kunnen. Zo niet, dan wordt dit gewoon een lesje op De Eredivisie 👏
Tbh snap ik wel dat Ajax vertrouwen heeft na die zomer schoonmaak. Maar vorig jaar zaten ze "straatlengte" achter en nu denken ze dat het ineens opgelost is. Domme fouten in balverlies tegen PSV en je bent zo kansloos, want ze prikken echt door 👀
Eens. "PSV speelt goed voorin en heeft een fantastische diepgang" is precies ons wapen. Als Ajax gaat duwen, verwacht ik dat het achter de rug van hun backs gevaarlijk wordt. 👀
"Het is een mooie test om te zien waar we staan." Eens, maar voor Ajax dan vooral. Als ze ons willen wegduwen, gaat het erom hoe snel ze onze omschakeling snappen. We hebben vaak al een halve kans nodig, dan ruikt die diepgang ineens naar doelpunten 🔥
Ajax praat weer met zo'n "we dichten het gat"-toon, maar wij moeten het gewoon op het veld laten zien. Michel zegt dominant willen zijn, ben benieuwd of ze dat ook in onze press volhouden. PSV voorin met diepte is echt het soort pijn dat je niet zomaar wegpoetst 😅⚽
Grote schoonmaak, nieuwe spelers, "filosofie"... allemaal mooi, maar de echte vraag is of ze PSV kunnen afremmen in de zone waar jullie 2e bal pakken. Anders wordt de arena geen steun maar vooral stress. 🤡

tbh Ajax kan wel roepen dat ze het gat gedicht hebben, vorig jaar waren ze gewoon te laat. als Cruijff weer een paar snelle keuzes maakte, okay, maar hoe snel klikken ze echt in big matches? 🔥
Ajax zegt "Wij willen dominant zijn", maar PSV weet vaak juist druk te zetten zonder te forceren. Benieuwd of ze onze omschakeling kunnen dempen, vooral met die diepgang waar Michel over praat.
