Wim Kieft sees dissonance at PSV: 'That’s just not quite it, is it now'
1 min readAfter PSV’s 1-6 victory over FC Utrecht last Sunday, Peter Bosz’s team is now preparing for the top-of-the-table clash away to Ajax. Next Saturday, in matchday 5 at 8 p.m., the fixture between the two most successful clubs in the Netherlands is scheduled in the Johan Cruijff Arena.
PSV travels to the Dutch capital with good spirits after two comfortable wins over FC Groningen (5-1) and therefore 1-6 over FC Utrecht. Wim Kieft also saw that PSV last Sunday, despite an early 1-0 deficit, impressed in the City of Utrecht.
Despite this, Kieft also sees a dissonance on the side of PSV with striker Ricardo Pepi. The former PSV striker says this in the program Rondo on Ziggo Sport.
''Pepi falls short. Pepi falls enormously short. I think he hit three balls in the first half,'' the Amsterdam-born player begins his astonishment about the American forward.
After that, Kieft continues. ''And that you don't follow along... I don't think that's his quality. But always so sharp for the goal, and that's it, not quite right now,'' the European champion of 1988 with Oranje goes on.
Then the World Cup comes up with Team USA, where the PSV player was mainly a substitute. ''And he hasn't played that much at the World Cup, I think. And he's fit again, right? I don't know what's going on with that Pepi,'' says Kieft.
In 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 the American was mainly the second striker behind Luuk de Jong and that’s when the former PSV player Pepi was at his best. ''I found him especially—he’s had a lot of injuries, but he was very good as a stand-in for Luuk de Jong. I saw him at moments in the last year of De Jong... Then I thought: well, is he going to put him out there? And then he got injured. I don’t know, you know. I was also looking at that Ueda and that Pepi. Yes, it’s still the question whether they’ll go or not, whether or not. Then you start the season as a striker in a pretty strange way?'', said the former striker, as presenter Wytse van der Goot interjects with the remark that Feyenoord striker Ayase Ueda has been sold to LOSC Lille in France.

😂 Ajax-uit is niet het moment om op scherpte alleen te leunen. Als hij tegen de verdediging niet mee helpt, dan gaat Bosz ook wisselen en ben je weer aan het herkaderen.
Pepi weer fit? lol, dan moet hij ook meteen fit voetballen. Volgens mij is de grootste dissonant inderdaad dat hij niet meekomt, terwijl de Jong er soms uit viel en hij juist staal moest tonen.
Pepi valt tegen... tbh ik zie vaak hetzelfde probleem: te weinig in de combi, te weinig ballen in gevaarlijke zones. Tegen Utrecht werkte het misschien door de flow, maar Ajax is slimmer en strenger. Idk of hij nu de juiste fit is als spits die ook moet aanschuiven.
Tbh ik snap Kieft z'n kritiek, maar ook: Pepi is vooral effectief geweest als back-up achter Luuk. Dit seizoen lijkt het rolletje anders en dan moet hij ineens meer doen dan alleen afmaken.
idk maar als Pepi z'n geloof ik drie ballen op doel raakt in de eerste helft dan zegt dat genoeg. Tegen Ajax heb je beweging en spel mee nodig, anders word je weggezet door hun controle.
"Dat is het nu toch net niet" is precies hoe het voelt met Pepi soms. Meeste momenten is hij alleen scherp op de rebound, maar in de opbouw ontbreekt hij.
Bruno? nee, Wim Kieft heeft imo wel een punt over Pepi. Tegen Utrecht maakte hij niet echt het verschil dat je als spits wil, en dan mis je dat "mee voetballen" wat Bosz nodig heeft.
Ik snap wat Kieft bedoelt met Pepi, want tegen Utrecht was hij soms echt "er wel" maar niet genoeg bepalend. Als je tweede spits bent, moet je toch meevoetballen en drukken, niet alleen wachten op kansen. Hopelijk pakt Bosz dit op voor Ajax uit, want daar wordt die ruimte meteen kleiner.
