Van Hanegem points to a red card for PSV and criticizes the KNVB
1 min readJoey Veerman received an early red card during the match for the Johan Cruijff Shield PSV - AZ (0-4) last month. This, among other things, meant that Peter Bosz's team lost without any chance.
Veerman received a red card from referee Serdar Gözübüyük due to a foul on striker Mexx Meerdink in which the midfielder’s foot came into the AZ player’s face. Even so, there have been several similar fouls this season where only a yellow card was shown or where no action was taken at all.
For example, last weekend during Ajax - Excelsior (2-2). As stoppage time was about to begin, it looked extremely clear that Ajax player Youri Baas had kicked Excelsior player Irakli Yegoian in the face with his foot, but both referee Jannick van der Laan and the VAR saw no penalty, to the great surprise of football icon Willem van Hanegem.
That writes De Kromme in his column for the Algemeen Dagblad. ''Ajax had enough chances to win, but let's not go overboard about the game either. After an hour they were simply behind at home against Excelsior and in the end they lost two precious points. Undeserved? They were better, but in hindsight they were allowed to be satisfied with it. Youri Baas, who I find a bit worked up this season, kicks Yegoian in the face and it baffles me that they in Zeist didn't see that as a penalty. That would have been 2-3,'' so it sounds.

Then the Feyenoord icon turns to the KNVB. ''I hear that those referees’ boss Van Meenen is every Monday morning half a morning short to tell clubs that they have been disadvantaged. Well, then Excelsior will probably get a call too. Such a foul earlier cost Joey Veerman a red card against AZ; now at Ajax it was nothing'', Van Hanegem said.

The quote "Zo'n overtreding kostte Joey Veerman eerder tegen AZ een rode kaart, nu bij Ajax was het niks" sums it up. Whether it was "peak" drama or just a mess of refereeing, PSV will be left thinking the rules depend on the opponent.
tbh i hate that we always end up paying the price for decisions while everyone else gets away. van hanegem is right, KNVB should be embarrassed, this "Zeist" circus is exhausting 💀
That tackle on Mexx was a straight red all day in my head, but the bigger issue is the standard. If the ref/VAR see red in one game and ignore it in another, then it just kills the trust.
Red kaart voor Veerman op dezelfde soort actie en dan bij Ajax-Excelsior ineens niks. Breng maar eens consistentie, dit is toch niet normaal. 👀🔥
