Valentijn Driessen targets Jordi Cruijff and points to PSV: “Especially if success fails to materialize”

Journalist Valentijn Driessen of De Telegraaf is of the opinion that the purchases that technical director Jordi Cruijff has made are primarily intended for the short term. Driessen says this in his column for the national newspaper.
''On paper Ajax is the winner of the transfer summer, with internationally seasoned players such as Daley Blind, Marc ter Stegen, Julian Brandt, Sofyan Amrabat, Viktor Tsygankov and Caio Henrique. Jordi Cruyff has, after Ajax’ disastrous year, assembled a squad that, with the acquired individual qualities, must compete to win the national title and secure a direct spot in the Champions League'', the journalist writes.
After that, Driessen continues on the risks that Cruyff takes. ''The Champions League income is necessary to survive financially. Cruyff's transfer policy at Ajax is entirely aimed at immediate success. In the long run, it could bring Ajax back to the brink of the abyss again. Especially if success fails to materialize'', the reporter continues.
In addition, the journalist also wonders what kind of legacy Cruyff leaves behind in Amsterdam if things go wrong. ''Sportively, there is no future-proof Ajax with expensive loanees and transfer-free older players on two- and three-year contracts with little residual value. While there’s something fishy about Cruyff’s million-euro signings. Tsygankov, for 4.5 million euros, signed on for just three years, and Leonardo (19.9) and Henrique (10.5) so far are presenting themselves as misbuys'', Driessen says.
Driessen also points to midfielders Sven Mijnans and Kodai Sano, who both left for PSV. According to the journalist, these are 'growth gems from the Eredivisie' who were completely ignored by Cruijff.
Finally, the reporter is also not pleased with the new foreign players at Jong Ajax. ''Whatever the case may be; what is going on at Ajax’s trading house is counterproductive for the youth academy. Jordi Cruijff, the other board members and the rvc should consider this, with the culture and history of Ajax in mind, as a serious reproach. And which player in the current Ajax, with all his new stars, represents—sportingly and in terms of transfer value—the most potential? The self-developed 17-year-old Abdellah Ouazane. Provided, at least, that he doesn’t have to make way for someone from the surplus of players signed by Cruijff'', Driessen said.

Driessen noemt Tsygankov, Leonardo en Henrique miskopen en dat zet Ajax neer als niet toekomstbestendig. Maar het wordt vooral spannend omdat PSV ook moet laten zien dat je met slimme keuzes sterker wordt in wedstrijden als Ajax-uit. Ik geloof dat PSV die honger beter omzet, zeker met dit soort discussie bij Ajax 🤬
Die quote over Sven Mijnans en Kodai Sano als "groeibriljanten" is echt mooi meegenomen. Bij Ajax lijken ze het talent te laten lopen en bij PSV krijgen ze kansen. Als Ouazane dan ook nog moet wachten, zegt genoeg lol.
Leonardo 19,9 en Henrique 10,5 die nu al als miskopen worden genoemd... dat klinkt als pure gokpolitiek. Wij hebben Sven Mijnans en Kodai Sano kunnen pakken, laat Cruijff maar hetzelfde kunstje nog eens proberen. PSV kan hier de lakens uitdelen als Ajax niet meteen loopt.
Ajax met duur spul en kort contract-gedoe... dat ruikt naar druk om meteen te winnen. Wij gaan zaterdag gewoon kijken of PSV die selectie kan vastzetten. Hun middenveld is dan vaak kwetsbaar als ritme ontbreekt, denk ik 👀⚽
Ajax heeft op papier de zomer gewonnen, maar op PSV-stand is het toch vreemd hoe Cruijff alles voor directe winst lijkt te stapelen. Als "groeibriljanten" naar PSV verdwijnen, dan ben ik benieuwd wat er in Amsterdam overblijft als het tegenvalt. 👀
Driessen heeft wel een punt hoor. "Zeker als succes uitblijft" ... dan ruik je gewoon het risico, en dat is precies wat Ajax vaker overkomt. Tbh kijk ik vooral uit naar Mijnans en Sano, want dat zijn moves die wél richting toekomst gaan. 🔥
"Zeker als succes uitblijft" vind ik de kern. Als Cruijff de CL-inkomsten nodig heeft en het loopt niet, dan gaat het snel hard. Wel ironisch dat Driessen uitgerekend PSV aanwijst met Mijnans en Sano.
Eens met Driessen dat het vooral op direct succes lijkt. Maar tbh: als dit soort "groeibriljanten" (Mijnans en Sano) bij ons kunnen doorbreken, dan is dat voor PSV echt winst. Ajax moet wel eerst presteren straks, anders komt de rekening.
