Valentijn Driessen points to former PSV player and takes a swipe at Ronald Koeman

1 min read

Orange won 1-2 against Serbia on Sunday evening. AZ striker Mexx Meerdink was important with two goals.

This means the first victory of the Netherlands national team under the new head coach Xavi Hernandez. Moreover, Xavi gave a start to former PSV player Joey Veerman, who last Thursday against Germany (1-1) came on for Quinten Timber and thereby made his return to Oranje after two years.

After the 2024 European Championship, Veerman no longer came into action for the Netherlands team under Ronald Koeman, and under the new national team coach, the former PSV stronghold is back in the lineup. Journalist Valentijn Driessen of De Telegraaf also sees that.

In a video item from the national newspaper, Driessen says he is impressed by Veerman's performance against Serbia. ''Yes, Frenkie de Jong will not be there for the time being. If Veerman also shows himself like this against Greece and at home against Serbia, that promises a lot of good for the Dutch national team'', the journalist says.

Then the reporter continues. ''He brings a lot of depth to the game and always tries to play ahead. He is also very composed and reliable, looks for the outside lanes and sometimes even sees the solutions from the inside'', says Driessen.

In the end, the journalist can’t help but take one more jab at former national coach Ronald Koeman, who decided not to select the former PSV player after the European Championship in Germany and, among other things, cited Veerman’s character as the reason not to select the midfielder. “Veerman had to spend two years on the bench under Koeman and is now, in a way, proving it right,” said Driessen.

"He gives much depth in the game" is precies wat PSV fans altijd zagen.

Veerman is echt terug op z'n oude niveau. The way he found depth and that killer forward play vs Servië was night and day.
