PSV watcher points to the board: 'In four months nothing has changed'

Partly due to an early red card for Joey Veerman, PSV Sunday evening suffered a painful defeat against AZ in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Shield. The Alkmaar side ultimately won 0-4 at the Philips Stadium, thereby claiming the season’s first trophy.

After the match, PSV watcher Tim Reedijk of Voetbal International is also critical of PSV’s defense, which gave away many chances against Alkmaar Zaanstreek. In doing so, the reporter also points to PSV’s board.

''Supporters also quickly have a tendency to call the crisis, but it is true that PSV already knew from March/April what the defense was going to look like. Then Jerdy Schouten got injured against FC Utrecht. And actually, nothing at all happened in that line,'' says the journalist in the VI segment Rondje Eredivisie.

Also the fact that the transfers of Armando Obispo and Adamo Nagalo did not go through, according to Reedijk, plays a role in why defensive reinforcements have still not been made available to date, and that, in his view, is quite regrettable. ''Armando Obispo and Adamo Nagalo would be sold, but that did not happen. They were working on a replacement for Obispo, but that has again been put on hold because Obispo was back. I do think you can blame PSV for that. It is now August and at a certain point you know that you are going to be playing for a price. And in that respect, nothing has changed'', the PSV watcher continues.

In addition, Peter Bosz’s squad has enough quality in midfield and in attack. ''PSV has too much quality in midfield and the attack to immediately buy strikers and midfielders. First, players need to leave. When you work out the balance of the preparations, you take into account that many players who went to the World Cup returned late,'' says Reedijk.

Finally, the reporter also points to the match PSV - Villarreal CF (1-3) on 25 July. ''But the champions say they want to do better than last year, and if you look at how open the day was against Villarreal, then that certainly deserves attention. Of course, the world will look very different on 2 September. On that date, PSV might even be playing with four other defenders, because Sergiño Dest is also back. But it's somewhat worrying, of course,'' Reedijk said.
