PSV icons speak out about new national team coach: “I’m not very enthusiastic yet.”

1 min read

Also PSV brothers Willy and René van de Kerkhof found out last week that Xavi Hernandez is the new national team coach of the Netherlands. As a result, after more than a month and a half, the KNVB’s search for a new national team coach has come to an end.

The Kerkhof brothers in the Willy & René PSV podcast of Omroep Brabant have not yet spoken out in a very positive way about the appointment of Xavi. However, they do give the Spanish coach the benefit of the doubt.

''Of course we have to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I’m not really very enthusiastic yet. I would much rather have seen a Dutchman in his place, and it may say something about the state of our football that we couldn’t find one'', Willy says.

For a long time it seemed as if Michael Reiziger would become the new national team coach, since Reiziger, according to journalist Martijn Krabbendam of Voetbal International, had long been the dream candidate of the KNVB. A week before Xavi’s appointment, De Telegraaf reported that Louis van Gaal was also willing to talk about a fourth term as national team coach, which made Van Gaal and Reiziger appear to be the remaining candidates.

Earlier, among others, Peter Bosz, Erik ten Hag and Arne Slot have already slammed the door shut for the KNVB. René, like Willy, believes that the KNVB should have appointed a Dutch coach.

''Bosz should have been the one. And Xavi was a big name, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he is a great coach. But he deserves the benefit of the doubt'', said René.
