PSV fan points to newcomer’s approach: “I don’t like that.”
1 min readLast Saturday, Kodai Sano was finally introduced as a PSV player after Sano was medically cleared last Wednesday. Last Tuesday, the midfielder also stood on the PSV training pitch for the first time.
Last week Tuesday, the Japanese player flew back from Athens to the Netherlands, which meant that the newly signed PSV player no longer came into action for NEC in the Champions League qualifying round against Olympiakos Piraeus (0-0). This put Sano under significant criticism from Hans Nijland, a former director of FC Groningen.
PSV fan Pascal van der Voort is also not entirely happy with the conduct of the Japanese player. Van der Voort says this in the latest episode of De Rood Wit Podcast.
''As a club, that would be a reason for me to pull the plug. And I really mean that. As Rik (table guest Rik Elfrink, ed.) already says: if he does that there, does he do it with us as well?'', the fan asks out loud.
Then Van der Voort continues. ''Suppose he plays brilliantly for us and in two years' time FC Barcelona comes. And at the same time we are playing in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League, and he says: 'Sorry, coach. I can't'. I understand that the clubs don't do it, but I do think this is a sickness within professional football'', the supporter says.
After that, the situation of former PSV player Jordan Teze is put on the table as an example. Teze left for AS Monaco in the summer of 2024 and initially refused to still play for PSV.
''We have experienced that too with Jordan Teze. He got a lot of criticism and then he could suddenly play. The payroll department still pays you those days as well. I don’t like that. I understand the story from the perspective of the player and the agent, but if it happens here, then I think too: 'Screw off, just do it normally'', Van der Voort concludes.

"Sorry, trainer. Ik trek het niet" is crazy if it actually happens. But if it is just preseason/CL scheduling, dont overreact. Either way, PSV cant look soft, otherwise every agent will try their luck 😂
Breng die zorg gewoon scherp in de organisatie, want als dit normaal wordt ben je als PSV elk seizoen te laat met je selectie. 💀⚽
Jordan Teze vergelijken gaat me net iets te ver, maar ik snap de frustratie. Als de salarisafdeling die dagen toch nog betaalt, dan zou je minimaal moeten verwachten dat hij z'n afspraken nakomt. Anders wordt het een soort loophole.
"Stel, hij speelt fantastisch bij ons en over twee jaar komt Barcelona" ja precies dit. Eerst zeggen ze dat alles kan, later komt er weer een 'sorry, trainer' moment. Dat is gewoon slecht voor de continuiteit.
Tbh het is ook gewoon een belangenconflict. Clubs willen vaak winst en planning, spelers/agenten willen flexibiliteit. Maar dat maakt het nog niet minder vervelend als je team dan wedstrijden mist.
Hans Nijland's criticism and then this quote from Pascal... I get it, but i think we should wait. Sano missed the Olympiakos matchup because of travel and medical timing, and thats not the same as refusing like Teze allegedly did. Still, the "if he does it there, he'll do it here" argument is fair.
That Teze example hits hard. If he gets paid and still refuses to show up, tbh it feels disrespectful to the squad and the fans. Kodai or not, rule is rule, right?
"Ik hou daar niet van" snap ik helemaal, als je als club al de planning rond hebt en een speler gaat ineens afhaken op basis van timing. Bij PSV moeten we gewoon streng zijn, anders wordt het precedent.
Die quote "Ik hou daar niet van" raakt echt hoor. Als hij zegt dat hij het niet trekt bij ons, dan moet je niet bij andere clubs ineens 'wel' fit zijn.
Kan ik me wel in vinden. Als je al onder contract zit en je gaat opeens zo'n houding aannemen, dan ruikt dat gewoon naar gebrek aan respect voor de club en de fans.
