PSV dragged through the mud after a draw against Shakhtar
1 min readPSV striker Ricardo Pepi played an extremely unfortunate match against Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday evening in the UEFA Champions League (1-1). Coach Peter Bosz therefore decided to bring Pepi off in favor of attacking midfielder Sven Mijnans.
That was also noticed by Ziggo Sport analyst and former PSV player Ruud Gullit, who was present at the Philips Stadium to analyze the match. Afterwards, Gullit didn’t hold back and the American striker was heavily criticized.
''Pepi didn't appear in the play at all; he also didn't get involved in the ball to offer himself. He was angry that he was substituted, but that was nevertheless justified,'' says the former world football player.
Analyst and also former PSV player Boudewijn Zenden joins Gullit. ''Shakhtar could keep it up quite easily; at PSV there was too little movement'', Zenden tells, after which Gullit responds: ''You have to have, from time to time, a striker who runs into the corner or comes to get the ball, so you get that feeling. But Shakhtar could just keep standing there.''

Unlike Pepi, midfield player Kodai Sano is praised by Gullit, who thought Shakhtar played well. ''I thought Sano played brilliantly in midfield. He had it quite difficult, because I thought Shakhtar put good pressure on. PSV had a lot of trouble getting the ball through in midfield or to the strikers'', says the analyst.
In the end, the former PSV captain found it an interesting match and he also saw two different halves. ''In the first half, it went really well for Van Bommel, but in the second half he was still neutralized by two men on the sidelines. I thought it was an interesting match from both teams. I thought Shakhtar with the ball were really very good; those Brazilians really can play football'', Gullit said.
