Kerkhof brothers disagree with each other and point at Eredivisie striker: “He can’t even receive a ball yet.”
1 min readAlso PSV greats René and Willy van de Kerkhof know that the Eredivisie season 2026/2027 is just around the corner. In doing so, the brothers disagree with each other about what they expect from FC Twente.
Willy thinks that the Twenters could become this season’s surprise, and René is especially critical of signing striker Wout Weghorst, who arrived as a free transfer from Ajax. ''Go away. Or whether FC Twente is his level? No, no, absolutely not'', René is firm in the Willy & René PSV Podcast from Omroep Brabant.
Last week, John van den Brom's team was eliminated in the Europa League qualifying round by Ferencváros from Hungary. The brothers haven't missed that either, and once again René points to Weghorst.
''We saw him in those two European matches of Twente, didn’t we? Then I think... He still can’t even receive a ball. No, I’m not going to waste any more words on it. It’s First Division level'', so says René.
Willy sees it differently than his brother. ''Don't underestimate them. Okay, they didn't start the season well, but they have a good team, I think'', says Willy.

"Wegwezen" lol, die René gaat full tegen Weghorst aan. Echt jammer als je een spits transfervrij haalt en hij meteen meteen vraagtekens oproept. Toch, Willy zegt terecht dat je ze niet moet onderschatten, zeker met dat soort spelers in de ploeg 😂⚽
"Wegwezen. Of FC Twente zijn niveau is? Nee, nee, absoluut niet" is echt peak René lol. Al snap ik het, want Twente is Europees ook gepakt. Toch ben ik bang dat Twente juist in het Eredivisie-spel wél de juiste automatismen heeft, en dan steekt René weer in de wedstrijd om gelijk te krijgen. 👀⚽
tbh Twente als verrassing snap ik ook, ze kunnen sneller schakelen dan teams die alleen op ritme draaien. Maar als René zegt "Het is niveau eerste divisie", dan moet Weghorst zich echt laten zien, anders wordt dat een transfer waar PSV later over moppert. we zien wel, ff afwachten tijdens de eerste speelrondes 🚀
Weghorst die transfervrij van Ajax kwam en dan meteen al het mikpunt wordt... tbh dat voelt als PSV-kwaliteit standards die je op Twente legt. Maar goed, als je in Europa niet eens een bal stil krijgt, dan zegt dat genoeg. 💀🔥
Willy heeft naar mijn idee gelijk: je kan Twente na een slechte start niet meteen afschrijven. Ze hebben gewoon kwaliteit en een heel team dat kan versnellen als het moet. Rene's focus op Weghorst klinkt alsof hij alleen op die Europese avonden is blijven hangen 😅
René slaat echt de spijker op z'n kop over Weghorst, "Zelfs een bal aannemen kan-ie nog niet" is wel hard. Als je dat tegen Ferencvaros in Europa al ziet, dan snap ik dat je twijfelt aan het Eredivisie-plekje. Maar Willy heeft wel gelijk dat een team met kwaliteit ook ineens kan doorpakken, dus Twente ligt nog niet vast.
René is echt hard hoor. But als Weghorst in de Europa League al zo lastig aan te voet kwam, snap ik die "zelfs een bal aannemen kan-ie nog niet" frustratie wel. Toch vind ik "eerste divisie" wel overdreven, vooral met Twente eromheen.
