Kenneth Perez hits back surprisingly hard at PSV captain: “Not someone who moves you forward”
1 min readSince this season, Mauro Junior has been the captain of the season, since Jerdy Schouten will be sidelined until at least early 2027. In recent years, the Brazilian has been seen as the ideal twelfth man, and now the versatile Brazilian is therefore the captain.
Mauro can play both in defense and in midfield. Earlier, coach Peter Bosz also spoke highly of the new captain.
''Mauro is for us a very important player. I’ve been saying that for years since I’ve been here, and that’s also really true. It’s not because he now wears that captain’s armband, but he already was that before'' said Bosz last Friday during the press conference ahead of PSV - AZ.
Yet ESPN analyst Kenneth Perez understands nothing of the fact that Mauro is made to matter so much by PSV. Perez believes the Brazilian is getting too much praise.
This says the Danish analyst in the program Voetbalpraat on ESPN. In addition, the former midfielder shares that he expects Mauro will eventually simply come to play as a left-back.
''Mauro Junior is coming in to play as a left-back. I find it special how much Mauro Junior is being made to grow. Please, just stop. No, that is just really no. He is not someone who takes you further,'' Perez says firmly.
The former footballer also thinks that PSV has better options in midfield for itself. ''You have to make sure there is stability. When can you play there, Myinan you have now, Joey Veerman can there. That will work out. You just have to make sure there is stability,'' the analyst continues.
The way PSV defended against AZ also draws harsh criticism from the Dane. ''You have to make sure you defend together and push through and things like that. Nine times out of ten in the Eredivisie it goes well anyway, but 0-4 is not nothing. Especially after AZ's substitutions, when there was nothing left of it at all,'' Perez said.

0-4 na de omzetting van AZ is natuurlijk belachelijk verdedigend. Maar Perez zegt dat Mauro als linksback komt en dan moet het ineens een probleem zijn, terwijl Bosz letterlijk zegt dat hij al jaren belangrijk is. Ik wil vooral zien dat PSV beter samen verdedigt, dan maakt de discussie over de captain minder uit. 🔥⚽
"Het is niet iemand die je verder brengt" vind ik echt kort door de bocht. Mauro Junior is juist zo'n speler die blessures opvangt en tactisch op meerdere plekken kan, en dat is in zo'n seizoen goud waard. Perez roemt Mijnans en Veerman, prima, maar als de vraag is wie het elftal in balans houdt, denk ik dat Mauro dat vaak wél doet. 👀
Perez heeft wel een punt qua stabiliteit, maar om Mauro zo af te serveren is echt overdreven. Als Bosz hem al jaren belangrijk vindt, dan zit daar toch iets. En tbh, na die 0-4 snap ik de frustratie, maar Mauro is niet de enige die die avond faalde. 💀
