Kenneth Perez completely baffled by Bosz’s reaction to PSV’s slaughter

1 min read

Kenneth Perez found it difficult, after the Johan Cruijff Shield, to place himself in Peter Bosz’s post-match analysis. Despite the hopeless 0-4 defeat against AZ, the PSV coach saw enough positive points, but according to the ESPN analyst, that does not do justice to reality.

Bosz pointed out after the match above all the circumstances under which his team had to play. PSV had already gone down to ten men early on after the red card for Joey Veerman and therefore had to adopt a different style of play than usual.

“I thought we were still standing well in that low block in the first half,” Bosz began with ESPN. “We actually never play like that. So in that sense, it was a great training session today. That’s how I look at it, too.”

According to the coach, the adjusted approach provided valuable insights. "We gave away very little and still created some chances. Those guys were supposed to show up on their condition and we kept at it well. Basically, we had to play the whole match with ten against eleven.”

After the rust, the score went up significantly. After Mexx Meerdink opened the scoring, Weslley Patati, Elijah Dijkstra, and Ro-Zangelo Daal ensured that AZ eventually won 0-4. Still, Bosz didn't want the heavy defeat to be seen as the main conclusion of the match.

“We trained something that we normally would never do in a match, so that we come into a low block. That is instructive. I don’t think you should pay attention to the counter-goals in this match,” Bosz said.

Perez had little understanding of that explanation. The analyst found it remarkable that the four opposing goals were, according to Bosz, hardly relevant due to the early red card. “That’s pretty strange,” Perez replied. “As if it doesn’t count because you played with ten men."

According to the former coach, even with one man less there is still enough to critically analyze. “Even with ten men you usually defend with ten players. You can still look at the defensive organization.”

Perez believes that Bosz is explaining the defeat too easily. In his view, a numerical minority may not be a reason not to analyze the defensive problems.

“So if you ever end up against a reasonably good opponent with ten men, do you give up? The odds are, of course, higher that you’ll lose, but yeah..."

The analyst concluded with even more criticism of the PSV coach’s explanation. “I understand that it’s offensively more difficult, because you’re not able to do that with a man down. I think Bosz talks about it too easily. It was 0-4, you know!”, Perez said.

Thanks to the convincing win, AZ captured the Johan Cruijff Shield for the second time in the club’s history. PSV begins the new Eredivisie season next weekend with a home match against Fortuna Sittard. Joey Veerman looks set to miss that game due to his red card.

Perez is terecht verbijsterd.
