Inappropriate statement by AZ coach: “Gözübüyük, try to help PSV get back in the saddle.”
1 min readAZ coach Leeroy Echteld knew last Sunday with his team to take home the two trophies in just four months. Echteld won the KNVB Cup last season and has now claimed the Johan Cruijff Shield after a 0-4 victory over reigning champions PSV.
Also thanks to an early red card for Joey Veerman after nine minutes, the match for the Super Cup was never a real contest. PSV held out until half-time for a long time and in the end the Alkmaar side were only ahead by 0-1.
After the break, Alkmaar Zaanstreek made optimal use of the 10 against 11 situation and in the end the final score was set at 0-4. As a result, PSV suffered a painful defeat at home.
Despite AZ's victory, coach Leeroy Echteld was not entirely satisfied with referee Serdar Gözübüyük. According to Echteld, the referee was trying to give PSV an advantage.
This is what the AZ coach said after the match against ESPN. ''I thought he was sometimes trying to help PSV back in the saddle. I told him that, calmly, like I am. I just say what I see,'' Echteld said.

This is where I disagree with the setup. With that fullback positioning, Sangare has to drop earlier or we get exposed on the counter. Still, when they hit the box quickly it looks dangerous, proper 🔥
"Not changing much" is brave... but tbh if the plan is the same, Ajax fans are gonna smell blood. I wanna see better link-up between the 10 and the winger, especially in transitions.
No way Cody Gakpo is gonna carry this alone again, we need more runs from the inside to stretch the back line. If PSV press high, dont leave the midfield open behind the 8.
Wie kijkt mee? 😅 If we are serious about the league, we cannot drop points in the games where we dominate early. One lapse and suddenly it's 1-1 and we are forced into hero ball.
The quote about being 'braver' is nice, but bravery without structure turns into chaos. I want the wingers to hold width and the fullbacks to time runs, not just sprint.
🔥 the intensity looked different in that segment. If we keep that energy, opponents cant settle, and those second-ball wins are gonna be massive.
tbh i like the idea of switching play more, but it has to be crisp. last matches showed how easily we get cut open on the far side, especially after turnovers.
If PSV want to control games, we need that quicker first pass from the back. When it takes one extra touch, the press gets set and the midfield ends up chasing shadows.
