“Has no interest in it today”—does he push a fully motivated and focused midfielder onto an opponent in this way?
1 min readAZ humiliated PSV at their home Philips Stadium by winning 0-4. It all took place after a controversial red card for Joey Veerman. Or was it not a disputable and controversial red card?
No, of course not. Joey Veerman kicks completely unnecessarily into the head of an opponent after eight minutes, while a teammate had already gone into the duel with Meerdink. A completely justified red card. With the studs into the head of an opponent, that is a straight red card and also a three-match ban. Intention or no intention, Joey Veerman commits a huge offence, point.
PSV fell behind quickly due to the kamikaze action by Veerman. Veerman struck Mexx Meerdink in the head with a leg raised too high. Referee Serdar Gözübüyük was called to the screen by the VAR and sent Veerman off. Shortly after, it was precisely the same Meerdink who managed to head in the 0-1.
So the question is whether Veerman really started the match focused and motivated, because a focused footballer simply does not commit this kind of foul. Especially not in midfield, where no danger ever led to a goal-scoring chance, certainly not with a teammate nearby, and absolutely not after eight minutes.

After the restart signal, there was no holding back anymore for Peter Bosz’s team. AZ coach Leeroy Echteld made an attacking change, with striker Troy Parrott for defender Billy van Duijl. Via Weslley Patati it became 0-2. The knockout blow came in the 58th minute. Right back Elijah Dijkstra scored after a fine run by Ro-Zangelo Daal. AZ played against PSV, which did try a bit, but couldn’t manage anything out of those half-chances afterward.
PSV still has a few important weeks to wait on the national and international transfer market. On Saturday, the competition match against Fortuna Sittard is on the agenda. Veerman will definitely miss the match due to his red card, and that's perfectly fine—an motivated Veerman is worth his weight in gold for PSV, but an inattentive Veerman certainly isn't. “He isn’t in the mood for it today,” wrote a PSV fan on X immediately after the red card.
