From Amstelveen | Incomprehension after appointment of referee Ajax-PSV: “Doesn’t feel any game at all”
1 min readNext Saturday, in matchday 5, the top clash Ajax - PSV will take place at the Johan Cruijff Arena. Both teams kick off the premier match at 8 p.m., and Sander van der Eijk has been appointed by the KNVB to oversee the match in good order.
In recent years, it was mainly Danny Makkelie and Serdar Gözübüyük who were assigned the top matches. From time to time, Allard Lindhout was also allowed to oversee a top clash in good order, and now it is Van der Eijk’s turn, hailing from Amstelveen, which is just a stone’s throw from the Johan Cruijff Arena.
This decision by the KNVB causes surprise among former top referee Mario van der Ende. Van der Ende tells Sportnieuws.nl in an interview.
''It surprises me that Van der Eijk gets this match. He is number four on the list, behind Danny Makkelie, Serdar Gözübüyük and Allard Lindhout. And yet he gets the most eye-catching match of the moment... That is certainly a surprise for me. In my view, the number one or two should have refereed it,'' the former referee says.
After that, Van der Ende goes into why he thinks the KNVB made this choice. ''I think the KNVB wants him to gain experience. Of course it’s fun for him, but from a quality point of view, you should appoint someone else. Van der Eijk has made good steps, but he does not belong to the top of the Netherlands. I believe that in top-level sport you should always go for the best—that isn’t him. But then again, maybe Van der Eijk will referee brilliantly. Let’s hope so,'' said the former referee.
Even among the PSV and Ajax fanbases, there is a lot of misunderstanding on the social media platform X about the KNVB’s decision to appoint Van der Eijk for this match, and in particular the fact that the referee comes from Amstelveen, within a stone’s throw of Amsterdam, can expect to receive the necessary criticism. Ik hoop echt dat ie het goed doet, maar eerlijk is eerlijk: dit voelt als gokken. In topsport moet je de beste aanwijzen en punt, anders krijg je alleen maar discussies rond elke beslissing. Kwaliteitskeuze van de KNVB, nah.
Van der Eijk uit Amstelveen op een steenworp van de Arena... ja dat ruikt gewoon naar gedoe, niet naar neutraliteit. Hopelijk fluit hij consistent, maar dit is vragen om gedonder 🤡
Kom op zeg, dit is echt peak KNVB gedoe. Als het echt "kwaliteit" is, fluit toch Makkelie of Gözübüyük. Anders wordt het weer zo'n wedstrijd waar iedereen alleen maar naar de VAR en kaarten blijft kijken. 🤡
"Voelt geen enkele wedstrijd aan" is wel heel hard, maar ik snap de twijfel. Als hij nummer vier is, waarom niet Makkelie of Gözübüyük? Dit is Ajax-PSV, geen oefenpotje. 👀
Tbh ik snap echt die keuze niet. Mario zegt eigenlijk gewoon hetzelfde, nr 4 hoort niet in zo'n topper... KNVB doet alsof ervaring de enige factor is 😅
Eerlijk: afkomst uit Amstelveen is natuurlijk onzin als argument, maar ik snap de frustratie. Als de top 1-2 namen het niet zijn, dan ga je kijken naar wie het wel is en waarom. Dit duel verdient gewoon topkwaliteit, niet discussie eromheen. 🔥
"Voelt geen enkele wedstrijd aan", da's precies wat ik bang ben. Ik hoop dat hij goed fluit, maar als hij al bovenaan moet instappen voor zo'n topper, dan krijg je automatisch stress bij beide kampen.
Het gedeelte over "ervaring opdoen" is zo'n klassieker... Jammer dat het nu Ajax-PSV is. 👀 Als er iets uit de hand loopt wil je geen nummer vier die nog stappen moet zetten.
Man man, dit voelt echt als een rare keuze. Als Mario van der Ende zegt dat hij niet tot de top van Nederland behoort, dan is dat gewoon voer voor discussie. Tbh, in de Arena wil je een scheids die elk duel meteen controleert, niet "even ervaring opdoen".
