Former PSV player takes aim at Ajax coach: “This is really the worst thing you can do”
1 min readIn the run-up to Ajax - PSV this coming Saturday, current ESPN analyst and former PSV player Arnold Bruggink has spoken out negatively about Ajax coach Míchel Sánchez. Last Sunday, after the Amsterdammers’ won match against Telstar (0-4), the Spanish coach drew a comparison between Ajax defender Aaron Bouwman and Virgil van Dijk.
The comparison was incorrectly worded by Bruggink. The former PSV player lets us know in the program Voetbalpraat on ESPN.
''I really find it terrible that he said that. But only for him, for Bouwman himself. What he's going to get now is that everyone... This is really the worst thing you can do as a coach: comparing someone at a very young age with a big player. I think it's a slip of the tongue'', said Bruggink.
Bouwman is only nineteen years old and is therefore already being seen by his coach as the possible new Virgil van Dijk. Journalist Tijmen van Wissing of RTV Oost places some caveats on Bruggink's claim.
In addition, Van Wissing also points to the poor English of the Spanish coach. ''He expresses himself awkwardly. Sánchez wants to make a comparison, wants to say something about Bouwman's qualities, and then he comes off very badly with his English'', according to the journalist.

I would keep the same shape, but adjust the fullback height. When they push too far, you invite counters and then you rely on luck. Tighten that up and we are cooking. 🚀
Goal!! Just praying the right back plays more proactive because the overlaps looked like the clearest chance in that setup. Wenn PSV turns that into 2-3 chances per phase, thats title football 👏⚽
ngl, i still think we are a striker away from being 100% ruthless. We create chances but sometimes the finishing feels a bit too predictable, especially against packed defenses. Need a real killer run. 💯
"PSV looked most dangerous down the right" and it shows, that side created the best moments. Still, we need end product from the final ball more consistently, otherwise it becomes just buildup. 🤬
I get the idea of rotating the squad, but imo the chemistry in the middle matters more than people think. Last time we looked shaky, it was because the tempo dropped for 10-15 minutes and then we were chasing. No cap, start strong again please. 🔥
"the pressing starts from the front" is true, but only if the winger doesnt jog after losing the duel. Been seeing too many half-hearted sprints lately, and it kills the intensity. Fix that and we look scary again 💯
I get the midfield balance the article is talking about, but tbh i think our buildup still gets too slow in the half spaces. When Xavi Simons drifts inside, we need a runner from deep like yesterday. Otherwise teams just step up and smother
If PSV really wants to play that high line, i need to see Gutiérrez on point tracking the runners. Otherwise it will be open season in behind. Still, the front four looks dangerous when they turn early, thats the difference 🔥
If PSV actually go with that press-trigger in midfield, we can win the ball high way more often. But the question is, can the back line hold when opponents switch it quick to the wing? 👀
